P>AGE Q. Wl[)'NI;SDIAY. JUNE 24. 19b1, W1IITBY FREI iPRESS Residents wi*ll have their say on Canadian Tire proposai Before allowing the construction of a Canadian Tire store behind Bowman Avenue, Whitby Town Council will hear the views of area residents. At iast week's meeting of the ad- ministrative commit- tee, councillors were in- formed of a proposai that would sec a 21,297 square-foot building constructed on the north side of Dundas Street East, just east of Bowman Avenue. However, council wili not consider giving the plan the go-ahead until it hears from area residents. "IThese people should have some input into the plans," according to Regional Councilior Gerry Emm, the chair- ~1~ man of the committee. "We're obliged to hold a public meeting to let them Know what's going on."t The committee will hold a public meeting on the proposai on July 6. However, area residents are holding their own public meeting to discuss the matter at 8 p.m. tonight in committee room one of the Whitby Municipal Building, 575 Rossland Road East. The proposed Canadian Tire outtet is to be located on the nor- th haif of a three-acre lot owned by Jovial In- vestments Ltd. The developer also wants to build a restaurant and other commercial facilities on the south haîf of the land which faces onto Dun- das Street. The plan also calîs for *the construction of a 130- car parking lot. While both the Region of Durham and the Town of Whitby have indicated that the plans are satisfactory, the town zoning byiaw catis for the land to be used for residential purposes. Durham's officiai plan catis for a special purpose commercial designation on the site. While Jovial has suggested that there are other possible uses for the southern haîf of the site, they would not con- form to the region's special purpose com- mercial designation ac- cording to the town's planning department. Therefore, a special bylaw would have to be passed in order for the site to accommodate these different uses such as the construction of a convenience store.
