l'AG E 12. W EDNESDAY, J UNE 24, 1981, WHITBY F R EE PRE SS Whitby Free Press SPOR TS WEEK Builders continue on their winning rampage The Whitby C.B.C. Builders continued on their winning streak last \veek defeating the Oshawa Legion Green Gaels for the third straight time this season by a score of 14- il. While the Gaels showed the deter- mination and en- thusiasm needed to win the Builders managed several important goals to keep the game con- tinually out of their reach. Oshawa managed to get within one goal during the closing minutes of the game but two back to back goals by Whitby put the game away for good. "That game wasn't as well played as the other Oshawa-Whitby games. They (Oshawa) are get- ting a bit goony. Maybe they're getting frustrated or something," said Builder's coach Jim Hinkson. The tough stance the Gaels took throughout the game hindered their efforts with penalties. A five goal night was turned in by John Fusco for the Builders. Kevin Van Sickle scored a hat trick while Gil Nieuwendyk picked up a pair. Todd Tran, Andy Perroni, Jeff Cole and Leo Nieuwendyk added singles. The night before Whitby handed the Brampton Excelsiors a 22-11 loss before the Builder's home crowd in three solid periods of lacrosse. "We may have been winning games, but we weren't pleased with the way we were doing it," said Hinkson. "We have guys who carry a lot of pride and we realize that at least in a half dozen games, we won, but there was no excitement because we hadn't played well enough for the two poin- ts." The game was univer- sally heralded by players and coaching staff alike as one of the strongest outings the Builders had turned in to date during this season. Ed Derks lead the Builders with four goals and four assists. Gil Nieuwendyk fired four goals and team mates Andy Perroni and Gary Crawford picked up three. Single goals were scored by Tran, Cole, Jamie Roach, John Fusco, Eric Perroni, Van Sickle, Steve Avisoin and Joe Fusco. "We started the year with a set system, the same used in prior years, but we lost some good talent because of age last year and it took me this long to realize I had to make adjustmen- ts," said Hinkson. The adjustments, which included tightening the defence and working on the passing plays, worked like a charm against Brampton. "It marked the first time this year Bram- pton have allowed more than 16 goals in one game." The Builders are in action again tonight when they take on the Hamilton Bengals at Iroquois Park. Game time is 8 p.m. Whitby teams honored The Whitby C.B.C.
