Council Column Seminar recognized industries By THE WORSHIPFUL ROBERT A. ATTERSLEY Mayor The Town of Whitby recently hosted an "At WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10, 1981, PAGE 21 Toastmistress Club installs new exec to end'80-81' year Home" Industrial Seminar on June 3 to acknowledge the contribution made to our com- munity by the approximate 100 industries. Through five separate residential developers contributing to industrial; commercial and residential growth, this seminar was made possible. It was my initial inten- tion as mayor, to recognize our family industries in Whitby and help each to become aware of products manufactured by their neighbours in the town. Needless to say, we are reaching this goal. I would certainly like to offer a special thank-you to all the industries for sharing in this seminar and for the professional displays. Driving along Highway 401, you will now notice signs designating Whitby Tourist Information Cen- tre with the usual question mark used by the provincial ministry of industry and tourism. This centre is located at the corner of Brock Street South and Burns Street in Whitby. Although our basic promotional material is from the Town of Whitby, the office will be offering information provided by the ministry of industry and tourism about all the Province of Ontario as well, as brochures from tourist attractions around the Durham Region. Four students have been employed through a federal grant to work as tourist counsellors at the centre - research information with reference to preparing a data resource file and provide an evaluation on the avenues of publications which Whitby should be listed within. There are over 50 booklets and brochures printed by the provincial ministry of industry and tourism that could receive coverage from attractions in Whitby. In Whitby, we mean business and I am certainly rectifying the problem of being absent from the last major provincial publication to discover Ontario. During the past few months, several programs have been telecast through Cable 10 reflecting "Whitby, the People's Place". I certainly ap- preciate the support of Mrs. Janet Coates, president of the Oshawa and District Council for the Arts in making June Whitby Month on her show. With summef around the corner, I would like to encourage the citizens of Whitby to come out and enjoy our many recreational programs and events planned as well as the fine tourist attractions we have in our town. It has been a great experience since my inception as your mayor... to attend and share in programs and activities you have organized in this com- munity. I certainly look forward to meeting many more of our residents of Whitby in this coming year. I would like to-take this opportunity to personally wish each of you a safe and enjoyable summer.... and wherever you travel, talk Whitby proud. We are special here in this town and we deserve to be recognized as Whitby - a place to live - work and play. Have a happy summer. Growth in self- confidence and an in- crease in com- munication skills have -helped inspire some members to continue their education or tackle more responsible jobs. As a result some of these people will, no longer have the time to continue with Toast- mistress. So it was with mixed feelings that members extended best wishes to those outgoing and welcomed their new executive. Highlighting this meeting was an especially beautiful ceremony in which first vice-president of Coun- cil Two. Jean Holtom, used a "wall of frien- dship" theme to install the new 1981-82 executive. Those in- stalled were: Althea Darwin, president; Lee Hewitt, first vice- president; Gail Harrison, second vice- president; Marlene Bond, secretary; Pauline Torresan, treasurer; Shirley MacDonald, council- delegate. Both Holtom and the Whitby Club honoured outgoing president Jeanette Etter. Main speakers Jean Martin and Nancy Spencer delighted members and guests with their presen- tations. Regular meetings of this group will recon- vene in September. Those interested in details about the Toastmistress Regional Speech Contest to be held in Toronto on June 12, or about Toast- mistress training may call Gail Harrison at 683-6067 or Pauline Torresan at 668-8760.
