The adoption of the plan paves the way for a draft amendment of the town's and the Region of Durham official plans, which if ap- proved, will allow for development in the com- munity. In a five to one recorded vote (with only Regional Councillor Tom Edwards dissenting) council ap- proved the study which calis for the eventual re- alignment of Victoria Street. The proposed re- alignment, which requires the approval of Durham Regional Council, would turn Victoria Street into a six Jane arterial road. According to the director of planning, Bob Short, the re-alignment has several Firstly, it would eliminate the need for a grade separation at the CNR tracks crossing Victoria and will create a by-pass for those people travelling through the area. It will also remove Vic- toria Street's stigma as a separator of the Port and the rest of Whitby. Police search for rape suspect Durham Region Police are searching for a hitch-hiker who raped a 15 year old girl early Sunday morning on Dundas Street near Craydon Road. A police spokesman said that the girl was att.acked by a man at approxiniately 2:15 a.m. Sunday morming. Police describe the man as white, in his 20's and wearing a large black cowboy bat, a feather from which was found on the scene. The man is about five-foot six-Inches tail, stocky wlth ear length sandy brown hair. He was wearing a reddish- brown leather jacket, blue jeans and dark coloured running shoes.
