Region needs crystal ballfor future planning EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is an open letter to Durham Regional Council from Henry Perry concerning the now tabled proposal to complete the second phase of the Corbett Creek/Pringle Creek Diversion Sewer. Mr. Perry is a resident of the Port. Dear Sirs: Further to our letter during the budget debate, asking for con- sideration for the con- tinuation of the trunk sewer in the Port area of Whitby. The part that seems confusing to most people is that this trunk sewer continuation was not for the main purpose of helping the residents of Port Whit- by, but instead was to take care of the over- flow from the present sewage treatment plant at Victoria Street, and stop the discharge of untreated sewage into t.he lake. After some time and work, it could have helped the local residents. The point is, the Region could not afford to spend two million dollars on this project, which is about one mile long, and through land that is not owned by individuals, but mostly Town property. Now we reacJ in the papers everyone seems to be on the band-wagon for the sewer being exten- ded to Brooklin, which is rather doubtful if it will help the present home owners there, but instead help some big developer? The real point is, how can you put a water and sewer line to Brooklin which is going to be seven or eight miles from the plants that will do the servicing, for five million dollars. Somewhere along the line, someone is get- ting a "snow-job". Don't you think so? It appears the whole idea of doing things is to build something you don't need first (like a water treatment plant, at a cost of millions), and service 14,000 acres of land that no- one wants to build on, then you spend millions more to make use of the water plant that we didn't need. It would appear someone needs a new crystal ball. Yours truly, H.G. Perry, Port Area Resident. 1981 daffodil festival Dear Sir: We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who - supported the 1981 Daffodil Festival. Our thanks go to the businesses who pre- ordered flowers, and those who allowed us to sell at their stores. Thank you also to the Senior Citizens of Whitby who sold at the downtown banks. A big thank-you to the residents of our town who so generously bought flowers and gave donations, thereby making our campaign so successful. Finally, our appreciation to the Whitby Free Press for supporting our cam- paign. The excellent coverage we received certainly helped in the success of the year's festival. Sincerely, Pauline Torresan Public Relations, Whitby Toastmistress Club. Fennell's speech on the money Dear Sir: i think Scott Fen- nell's summary of (Prime Minister Pierre) Trudeau's speech on the constitution was right on. Of course, Trudeau's speech would be well worded and eloquently given, he is a master deceiver and it beats me why intelligent Canadians cannot see this. We have a won- derful beautiful coun- try, where we are free to -live, worship, buy, sell and grow under God. There is no com- parison to our freedom with that of countries under a dictatorship, and yet if we don't wake up as a nation we may find ourselves helplessly ensnared. We are free now, we must do everything in our power to keep Canada free. A Canadian, Mrs. T.E. Humphrey, Ashburn, Ontario. THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF WHITBY I~5 PROCLAMATION "DR. J.O.
