PAGE 8,WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 1981.WIlTBY FRE PRESS ACVI students visit Waterloo Senior students and some of their teachers from Whit- by's Anderson Collegiate are scheduled to visit the University of Waterloo some tirne today. The students will spend the day learning about com- puters, attending lectures and workshops in the mor- ning and finding their own solutions to problems on campus computers during the afternoon. Consultants will assist them. Activities include: a short course for those with no previous computer instruc- tion; a course for those who have some understanding of the computer language known - as BASIC; a workshop for those with some understanding of the FORTRAN language, and a course in PASCAL for those capable of activity beyond the FORTRAN language workshop level. "We have upgraded the computer science day program considerably this year despite the fact that the university is under con- siderable financial pressure," said Dr. K.D. Fryer, associate dean of mathematics. "This is in part due to the fact that high school computer science programs are also con- tinually being expanded and updated." He feels the UW computer science day program is a particularly helpful ex- perience for students in up- per years who are strong in mathematics and have a keen interest in computers. Waterloo is seeking to in- form young people about computers since, in- creasingly, society is looking to the computing profession to solve its infor- mation processing problems. There is con- tinuing keen demand in the job market for computer specialists with strong mathematical backgrounds, Dr. Fryer reports. In fact, during the current year the number of jobs being offered to UW co- operative mathematics students is substantially in excess of the number of students available to fill them. This is particularly true for computer science students whose work term jobs have increased by 80 per cent over last year. Waterloo has been of- fering computer science days for more than 16 years. Last year, more than 9,500 students from more than 215 schools participated. In ad- dition Waterloo has, for several years, permitted specially-approved high school students who have completed grade 12 and who have a working knowledge of FORTRAN to entrol in one of its courses ... carrying one-half credit towards a mathematics degree. m - , p FA.P Council Column ~ i ,KNNEURERU.UEKERUUU.UU.E.EKER.ERUURR.HEXE..' ATTERSLEY Mayor of the Town of Whitby I would like to begin this column by extending sincere congratulations to George Ashe on his appointment as the new Ontario Minister of Revenue, on behalf of the citizens and council of the Town of Whitby. We wish him every suc- cess in the future. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere ap- preciation to the residents of our community and the staff of this municipality for the involvement and support I have received since my inception as mayor. It is difficult to express the large number of progressive ac- tivities which have resulted from a town reflecting a "positive" attitude toward growth, with our future in mind. Whitby residential development has surpassed many communities in Ontario. Within the past three months recor- ds indicate 81 building permits issued. March, 1981 permits issued as follows: Residential 76.60 per cent Commercial 4.55 per cent Industrial 14.64 per cent Agricultural or Institutional 4.21 per cent Needless to say Whitby is proving to Ontario - "We Mean Business." The tourism industry of Whitby is an extremely important development toward our future goals. During the past win- ter, expansion of both Cullen Gardens and Family Kartways have been preparing for a confident 500,000 visitors to our area during the coming season. Our family industries should be commended for their con- tinuing motivation. During the past year approximately 73 per cent of our industries expanded their operations adding over 1,000 employees. Once again, I thank you -- because of your expertise and concern, Whitby has become a very unique town to enjoy every day living-- it definitely is a "peoples place". 1 to 5 Year Guaranteed investment Certificates Annual Interest Rate subject to change VICTORIA AND GREY TRUST Since 1844 Whitby: 308 Dundas St W 668-9324 Torcnto Lirie 683-7189 Member Canada Deposit insurance Corporation
