By hiring young local musicians the Doobies f av ours growth About 60 businessmen recently formed a businessmen's association in former Pickering Village, now a part of Ajax. One of the members and boosters of the new group is Doobies Restaurant. Doobies opened in August at the corner of Church Street and No. 2 Highway and the management is pleased with the way the business has gradually grown over the months. Breakfasts and lunches are the mainstay here, and burgers (seven varieties) are the specialty of the house. Owner Paul Volpe is en- thused about the new businessmen's association and feels that by working together some of the projec- ts planned by the group a be carried out with the co- operation of the local coun- cil. Doobies completely remodelled when they took over. The walls are done in light knotted pine and an- tiques are set up around the main dining room. Brown table cloths blend nicely with the decor as does the panelling of artificial red- dish brick. The building which houses Doobies Restaurant has long been a landmark in Pickering. For many years it was used as a grocery store. When Paul bought it for a restaurant, he had it completely remodelled. It is bright and dlean, and an eating spot enjoyed by many, of aIl ages, in the public exposure they other- wise might neyer have had. Along with the live enter- tainment, will be special ac- ts that will be presented on certain nights of the week. It was our second visit to the Verandah in three mon- ths. This time it was a steak and shrimp plate that ap- pealed to us. Both dinners were served with potatoes and other vegetables. Unfortunately, the Veran- dah got off to a rather bad start, what with heating and water problems, over which the management had no con- trol. This restaurant by the way, is on the second floor, but is quickly reached by elevator and just to the left of the doors as you step out.
