Now that garbage collection service is provided for the en- tire Municipality of Whitby, the need for the Transfer Station is reduced. The annual cost for operating this Tran- sfer Station to the Town and Region is estimated at $80,000.00 and it is therefore Council's decision to close down this facility and remove this financial burden from the Municipality and the Region. Any residents who are not receiving Municipal garbage collection service, but wish to avail themselves of this ser- vice, may do so by requesting in writing to Mr. G. Mcintyre, 575 Rossland Road East, Whitby, Ontario, L1N 2M8. Any resident who wishes to continue to dispose of his gar- bage personally may do so by taking these wastes to the Regional Sanitary Landfill Site in Pickering (Brock Road). This facility is open to-the public daily to 4:30 p.m. and on Saturdays to 12:30 noon. This site is closed on Sundays and Statutory Holidays. There is no charge for anyone disposing of 200 lbs. of household garbage. R. A. Kuwahara, P. Eng., Director of Public Works. Words are powerful.tools Between You and Me By RUTH COLES Reason over passion. Somehow these words remind me of Mr. Churchill. No doubt his words, probably used during the war to uplift and spur us on to greater effort. Words have great power both for good and"bad. All of us who were adult during the Second Great War remember how this man's use of words inspired us and no doubt hastened the end of the war. Actions speak louder than words, maybe, sometimes yes and sometimes no. Words can comfort and heal; they can destroy and defeat, a powerful weapon or a consolation. i can well remember my family telling me when I was very small that the spoken word could never be taken back; once said it can never be retrieved. It is a wise man who thinks before he speaks and sometimes a wise one who thinks before he acts. The old admonition, "you are never sorry for cross words never said," is always something to keep in mind. This past week we had a visit from the President of the United States of America and his wife. An interesting visit for those Canadians who are interested in their country and international affairs. To say we are ashamed of the way our guests were George Ashe Talks Facts Energy I strongly support Ontario government plans to reduce much of our dependence on imported oil with new Ontario based energy sources. Income I believe in the free enterprise blueprint for provin- cial progress that will continue into the 80's - progress that has resulted in a 7% higher average income in Ontario than the nationa) average. Employment I wili work to ensure that Durham West continues to receive its fair share of job creating programs. Health Care I am proud that despite spending restraints On- tario continues to provide one of the world's finest health care services. Transportation I support plans for the electrification, improvel- ment and extension of the GO Transit system. Environment I support the ongoing clean up of the Great Lakes in which Ontario has and will continue to play a leadership role. Day Care Ontario provides two-thirds of ail registered day care spaces provided in Canada and the program continues to expand. Senior Citizens Positive programs have been activated to ease their retirement years and these programs will continue through the 80's. For Advice or Assistance call these PC Committee Rooms. The daffodils will be sold in the Safeway and Miracle Food Mart plazas and other locations throughout April at a cost of $2 for 10 blooms. Last year, Beta Sigma Phi raised $1,500 for the society. In 1981, they hope to improve this by at least $500. *-Free Press Staff Photo received on the hill by a thoughtless group of demonstrators is putting it mildly. Objectives can be reached and thoughts put across in many ways but not by boorish, rude behaviour by a minority group. What are we coming to that we as hosts can tolerate such behaviour to invited guests? "The odd couple," what a demeaning reference to our T'rime Minister and the President of the United States. In- telligence and good breeding transcends all differences at a time like this. How and why do the press try to prejudge discussions which have not taken place? In 27 hours it is impossible to resolve all differences and difficulties of any magnitude. With problems so complex and varied it is an impossibility for those concerned with both sides to come to immediate solutions without considerable study and thought. Communication is an essential ingredient for such discussions and a framework has to be established within which discussions have to take place. This enables the par- ticipating parties to have a clear understanding of each other's points of view. It is not reasonable for those outside the area of discussion to clamour for immediate results. In their own minds they may have strong views but such is the situation where reason must prevail over passion. Another area of great passion is the political arena. I think in many cases reason literally flies out the window. Often passion in a mindless form takes over. The most incredible actions are taken, words are said that have no bearing in truth and sometimes these words are distorted beyond reason. This summer a royal wedding, something which will be en- joyed by many of us. The world needs love and romance; remember, "all the world loves a lover?" Let's enjoy it with happiness and reason. The inane chatter, the gossip we can do without. The young couple have dignity and a right to a few months of joy without the press hounding them to death in a personal way. On their wedding day we will celebrate our first anniver- sary. No doubt we will be glued to the T.V. set all day and evening. We are both royalists and feel proud that we have such a fine royal family. If ever amarriage was made in heaven we both feel it must be ours. I have learned to slow down in supermarkets! My pace is slower and if separated from my husband at any time I stand still as he asked me to do and all is well. Now I find he always takes very precise measurements when he is doing anything in the house; I don't ever. However, as yet I find both ways work. Oh mine isn't always correct but close enough. I never have time to be so precise but I am learning and who knows in time I may even master this skill.
