WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MARCI 1 il, 198 1, PAGE~ 13 By TIIE REV. ANTIIONY MEAGIIER Rector St. John's The Evangelist Roman Catholic Churcli Tuesday afternoon in the sunshine Caesar Da Silva raked the spring lawn. Steel claws envigourated the soil, tèaring from the dormant grass dead leaves and stones and tufts of matted fibre. Earth ready for life glistened in the darker raked section of the lawn, as steel penetrated the soil pulling away cluttering sticks and choking paper. Off to the garbage with this; on to spring for the lawn. There is life in the days of our sojourn whîch is precious. The life we share with our family. The life of friendship. Our True meaning of Lenton season own life of learning and growing. 'The love we build and cherish that is married life. The life of community and city and country and world whose richness and brotherhood our talents can help create. The ife shared and given to us by God Our Father. Lent can be a time to rake the lawn, to tear away the paper and stones and matted fibres choking what is truly preclous in our life. Hours before the T.V.; more and more overtime; busyness; drinking; things; pettiness; unforgivingness. A lenten raking can tear away waste, and leaves room for life. For a father to walk hand in hand with bis child. For a family to talk and to be kind. For a couple to cherish their very selves. For a woman to know her child. For a boy to enjoy bis grandmother. For a girl to be helped by her brother. For a friend to be there -- For a person to pray and to know that no matter what he or she may accomplish, or how he or she may fai!l, the love that God bas will remain and will find room for forgiveness - will bring and give life and life in abundance. The ashes of Lent symbolize the shortness of life on earth and the hope and promise of a death to ail that is empty and useless and downright evil. The dust of the ashes recalîs the dust of Genesis from which God made ail the good things of creation, especially mankind. Lent can be a tremendously valuable time to cultivate what is really worthwhile in each of our lives and to discard what is of littie or no real value. God's wisdom calis us to life that is a banquet; too of ten we would settie for a bologna sandwich. Moreover, the spirit of the world often says, as an after dinner speech, that the bologna sandwich of money tastes better than the banquet of love. Please hand me the rake, Caesar.
