WIIITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4, 1981, PAGE 19 EduInfo By TRUSTEF IAN BROWN Durham Board of Education (The Whitby Free Press presents this monthly column as a public service. Readers are invited to send questions to Trustee Ian Brown, at the Durham Board of Education, 555 Rossland Road, West, Oshawa, Ontario. L1J 3H3.) How can we get a French Immersion Program in Whitby? If a sufficient number of Whitby children (at least 26) are registered for a French Immersion Kindergarten for Sep- tember, 1981, accommodation in A Whitby school is available, and a qualified teacher is found, the chances of a French Immersion alternative beginning in Whitby are very good. Interested parents who are committed to having their Parenthood ordained as highest of cailings CONT'D FROM PG. 9 "The cow forgets that she was once a calf. The calf forgets that she will one day be a cow." If both age groups would take heed to this and use their memories intelligently, many clashes would be avoided. To sum up, what the parent needs in one word is 'love'; not the sentimental, mawkish, romantic thing that has come to be attached to that word in popular usage. But what the Anglican Prayer Book calls 'that most excellent gift of love.' What is meant by love in this sense has been defined as "the deliberate conviction of the mind to.seek nothing but the good of another, issuing in a deliberate policy of the life to achieve that end." That is what we parents need for our children. Who is sufficient for these things? Only God, through Christ, can help us in this highest of callings. through design CONT'D FROM PG. 18 too deep (from front to back) to permit a person to sit comfortably. Such pieces violate the rules for good proportion. They force an individual to sit forward on the edge of the cushion or back into the chair making it awkward to get up. Some highboys and tall cabinets that have drawers too high to reach easily. A drawer that can be reached only by getting on a step stool is not very fun- etional. Yet, because of the need for storage space, tall pieces are often necessary. There is general agreement among professionally trained in- terior decorators that Queen Anne furniture are exam- ples of excellent propor- tions, both functionally and aesthetically. So are Chip- pendale, Sheraton and Hep- plewhite chairs. Wherever furniture is found, you should cast a critical eye on it. Never be misled into thinking that an object is well designed, or is in perfect taste, simply because it is in a museum or on the page of an expensive magazine or book. It must meet the principles outlined in this article if it is to receive this stamp of ap- proval: good proportions. Next month is our lesson on scale. mummmmmmm LET I GLENWOOI PUT YOU BODY BACK IN SHAPE Our expert body repaii can put your auto back for winter driving. This should be done as soon as possible. Why won't the board send a copy of the board meeting agen- das to every parent advisory group in Whitby? The cost of sending out the agenda to all schools int he region would be high and of minimum benefit. However, if the parent advisory committees would get together and ap- point one person to serve as an "information officer", I would be prepared to contact that person or arrange for an agenda to be mailed. That individual, in turn, could pass on relevant information to each group. However, it shoudl be noted that the agenda is prepared and distributed to trustees only three or four days in advance of the board meetings. One of my roles as trustee is to keep the public informed of proposals, plans, etc., the details of which are discussed weeks or even months before they appear on the agenda of a full board meeting. As issues come up, I will be sharing relevant if- ormation which is of conern to large numbers of us, and will be soliciting your input. I understand the board spends thousands of dollars because of vandalism. What can be done about this problem? The board is working to install security systems in the schools, to provide better lighting of school sites, and to iden- tify audio-visual equipment, etc. so that it will be easier to recover it if stolen. Increased surveillance by neighbours, police and TOPS (Teens on Patrol) is helpful. I would like to see offenders charged if they have violated a law, and for them to make restitution whenever possible. Students must be responsible for their actions and accept logical con- sequences. Some juridictions have established a "damage deposit** in their schools, whereby money not spent to repair damage caused by vandalism is turned back to the student body for its use. At the same time, however, the reasons and causes of vandalism have to be understood, and measures to combat the causes should be increased (e.g. more support services like guidance counsellors, social workers, and psychologists). Schools must be viewed by students as of- fering positive and successful experiences, and places of which they are proud. Greater parental invovlement in school activities would be beneficial.
