What is faith and what does it mean to us? To each and every one of us it may have a different connotation. It is con- fidence or trust in a person or thing, in a system or a religious belief. An obligation of fidelity or loyalty; to keep faith, to act in good faith and to see truth as in good faith. Most of us live with faith. We take it for granted on arising in the morning that all will be well. It is an unconscious thought naturally, otherwise we would be very neurotic. We drive, we fly, we cross busy roads probably on faith. We may have the odd qualm on occasion but it soon disappears if we are to function well. Hope beats eternal in the human breast. We live in a christian country. For many years christians and Jews out- numbered other faiths but there has been a change over the years probably for the best. A melding of beliefs and thoughts may increase people's awareness of the world at large. A belief in some religion is a good beginning for any child Reynold's Street to be extended Whitby Town Council has decided to extend Reynold Street from Gilbert to On- tario Streets sometime in 1982. As one matures, there often is a deviation away from formal religion but the basic concepts remain. Many adults find their church in their gardens, the woods or the sea where in quiet contemplation or meditation they find themselves and fortify their faith to gain strength. Strength of purpose and responsibility is one of life's greatest assets as one has to rely on oneself when the crunch comes. Strength doesn't just come willy nilly it has to be developed and fortified within ourselves. In this way many people can withstand whatever comes their way. A permissive society neither demands or expects discipline and respect and so what follows is every one to his own or follow the leader. Thus we see demonstrations or what have you. Those poor souls in hospitals needed faith and hope which was justified by people who dug in and went beyond the call of duty. What an example to set before our children, the growing, learning ones or for that matter for the whole world. Faith in humanity. What holds it all together? Faith may be the bulwark against doom and gloom. We could all feel a terrible despair if we gave much thought to what is really happening in this great country of ours. It could almost be a Utopia if people didn't allow themselves to be worked up to a frenzy. I often wonder why people come here from other lan- ds to find a better life and then once settled in some begin to rabble rouse and create horrendous problems.- Why do we allow it to happen? Civil rights, which has become such an issue, does not seem to help. We have always had the freedom of speech but that does not necessarily mean we have to listen to abusive horrid insults spewed out to those in authority. Where does our faith go when we see some minority groups making mountains out of molehills? Do these people contribute to society and obey the law? We have a loss of faith when we see people take action without concern for their fellow men. Our faith, too, is destroyed by constant reports of doom and gloom and placing too much reliance on these reports. If we lose that faith it is conceivable that a lot of the predic- tions will come to pass including the deterioration of our society. It is only by having faith in ourselves.and those to whom responsibility is entrusted and by using this faith in a positive manner that we can expect to reverse backward or down- ward trends. This simply means that it falls upon us to develop a positive attitude for the betterment of the whole of society which in- cludes our nation and everything which it encompasses. Not to be excluded is faith in our own immediate family because the family unit is the base for our attitudes and con- tributions to society. Let us not allow our faith to lessen as it is the most wholesome tonic available.
