ENTERTAINMENT ....with Barry Murkar Newman and Asner battle it out i "Fort Apache" Paul Newman and Ed- ward Asner star in Times- Life's "Fort Apache, The Bronx," a powerful account of the embattled 41st police precinct in New York's violent and devastated South Bronx. The David Sussking Production, directed by Daniel Petrie for release by 20th Century-Fox, will open here soon. Newman is as forceful in his 26th year of filmmaking as he was when he began his career. As Patrolman Mur- phy, a tough, laconic cop with a sharp sense of humor, he gives one of his strongest performances. The man who was Hud, the Hustler, Butch Cassidy and Cool Hand Luke is once again the outsider, breaking with ac- cepted codes of behavior to formulate his own set of values. Ed Asner departs from his "Lou Grant" image to play the unbending police com- mander of the fort, a "book" cop determined to bring discipline to his men and or- der to the streets. Nicknamed Fort Apache, New York's 41st precinct is the only safe haven from the violence of the surrounding streets, a 40-block area of burnt-out buildings, demolished tenements and rampant crime. Written by Heywood Gould and produced by Mar- tin Richards and Tom Fiorello, with Mary Lea Johnson and Gill Champion as co-producers, the film is based on the real-life ex- periences of Tom Mulhearn and Pete Tessitore, two ex- cops who were themselves assigned to the beleagured 41st. It is, ultimately, the story of one officer, played by Newman. After 18 years on the force, he faces a crisis of conscience that pits him against his fellow officers. Also in the cast are Ken Wahl ("The Wanderers") as Newman's young partner, Kathleen Beller as Wahl's innocent girlfriend, Danny Aiello as an enraged cop, newcomer Rachel Ticotin as Newman's Puerto Rican girlfriend and Pam Grier as a prostitute whose drug ad-. diction leads to her tragic degeneration. I would like to thank the Whitby Free Press for providing this column as one means of accomplishing that contact. Although most of my efforts so far have been to listen and learn, I have taken the opportunity to express my views on some issues and have, with the co-operation of town staff and council, been able to solve some of the problems that had sur- faced. The snowmobile situation has improved but has not been entirely solved. I would like to emphasize again that we do not want to ban snowmobiles from being used but we do seek co-operation and respect for privacy, private property and safety. Some vandalism at the outdoor rink at Meadowcrest School by snowmobilers has not been appreciated at all. My biggest defeat, so far, was my inability to save the Brooklin transfer station. I am concerned about the situation and feel we have lost a well used facility without logical alternatives. I have been invited by some organizations to attend their meetings and hear some areas that effect and concern them. I welcome these opportunities and I welcome the imput that they are able to provide. I would like to encourage all of you to express your opinions and concerns about your town either through one of the available organizations, on a personal basis to myself or other councillors, or at public meetings. Public meetings are held by the town for most major issues and are designed to accommodate your input. They are available for us to listen to your comments and opinions on that particular subject. I am available to discuss your ideas or your problems and I encourage you to contact me.
