PAGE 10, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1979, WHITBY FREE PRESS mmp- -1 air R eport from Queen's'Park By GEORGE ASHE, MPP (PC-DURHAM WEST) J As most of you will be aware from recent press reports, an Environmental Assessment Board Public Hearing is scheduled to begin on December l7th in the Town of Ajax Council Chamber. The purpose of this Public Hearing will be to obtain information and hear~ public views about a proposed Liquid Industrial Waste Treatement plant-iii Ajax.. The site in question is the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control plant, about a hall mile south of Bayly Street on Valley Road in Ajax, which'wll stop treating Environmental Assessmen t Board tomem Ajax soon sewage waste in the near future. There appears to be some confusion about the Environ- mental Assessment Board Public Hearing. I would like to stress that this Board will sit for much longer than just one dayi. On December l7th, the only thing the Board plans to do is meet everyone who wants to be involved in the Public Hearing, officially receive a copy of the proposai and set up a schedule for the main portion of the Public Hearing, should go to the Ajax Council Chamber on December 17th. The Public Hearing Chairman wil first introduce himself and the other Board members. Next the Chairman will ask if any other party is to be represented by a lawyer before the Public Hearing. Any other lawyers *will stand and be recognized. At this point, theChairman will ask if there is anyone else who would like to participate in the Public Hearings. This is the time any member of the public can be recognized as a party to the proceedings. I am very aware that many people are sometimes hesitant to speak up on these occasion. If any of my con- stituents would like to participate in the Public Hearing, simply attend on December 17th. When the Chairman asks if there is anyone else who wishes to participate or ask questions of the experts, stand up, give your name and ad- dress, state you are a resident of the area and would like an opportuity to ask questions (or present a submlssion) throughout the Hearings. Once the main portion of the Public Hearing begins, the general public can keep close tabs on what is happening by phoning Mr. Tom Murphy of the Environental Assessment Board at 965-2531. Mfter each witness has given his/her evidence, the lawyers may ask him/her questions. Following this, anyone who has been1 recognized by the Board on December l7th, may ask the witness questions as well. If you want to present a submissi'on, then you may become a witness, take the stand, present your case and may be asked questions by the lawyers or the public. The point of nmy columnn this week is to encourage any and ail of my constituents who have concerns and/or questions about the proposed Liquid Industrial Waste Treatrnient plant, to attend on December l7th, and make sure you are recognized as a participant to the Public Hearings. Do not allow long technical words and red tape to intimidate you. The'environinental Assessment Board has been set up by the Provincial Government to mnake sure that everyone has a fair chance to be involved and ask questions. If you would- like furthier information on the procedures for the Public Hearing, just caîl my Constituency Office in Ajax, 683-6707, and leave a message. Your caîl will'be returned as quickly as possible either personally, or by my Queen's Park Assistant, Sheila Wilson. 1
