WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 24. 1979, PAGE 9 The ýChurchl Speaks i Wl -z Take tiMe to, lsten to His voice By THE REV. W.J.S. McCLURE St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Neyer missed church, a great reader and a sermon- taster, was old Jack. He thought the new Minister was "a very decent, likeable felow, but he's no preacher. He reads his sermons; reads closely; he's like a holy èrow by the side of the road, - he pecks, looks up, pecks again, looks up again. Instead of boldly saying what he feels, be speaks baltingly like a bird that is ready to fly away at any moment." Jack's wife says her husband isn't being fair to the young reverend, She says, "I've heard you say that tbe content of bis sermon is good and even if he's not much' of a preacher, he's a very good listener. The last minister we bad was very eloguent, but he was always in such a hurry, he had no time for anyone. If be asked you how you' were, - he was moving away as you answered. Sure, this new minister is quiet, - he asks bow you are and you know he's listening to what you had to say." So mucb for 'roast the minister'! I like the wife's descrip- tion, of the new minister, for there are far too many mimisters, and far foo many people who do far too mucb speaking and not'enougb listening. Notice,. will you, that God bas given us two ears and only one moutb, and that could mean tbat we should, listen more and talk less!1 The importance of being 'good listeners' cannot be too heaenly' underlined. I wonder if many of the so-called delinquents of our day are tbat way because in tbeir youth- fui days tbeir parents hadn't time to listen to them! Oh, they were 'good' parents in so many ways, - gave a generous weekly allowance, nice presents for birthdays, Cbristmas and so on, but were too busy to once say, "tel me about it, so that 1 can maybe help you understand. " I tbink there are a lot of young folk to-day wbo are looking for somebody with time, because tbey have many tbings tbey want to talk about.' it is very i mportant to be available, ready to listen to what tbe young members of our family and community bave to say. I remember bearing about two daughters wbo ap- proached tbeir motber with a certain request and she said, "you'd better ask your fatber about tbat.'" The girls hesitated; then one of tbem said, "you ask him Mumnmie, we don't know Daddy very well." It is flot really very sur- prising tbat when children grow older, they often have littie to tell their parents, for when they were younger, the parents had littie time tô listen to tbem. Time must be made to listeni to our children, and to other people too. Tbere are many, many alone people in society to-day. Just visit one or two of them and you will soon know bow eager tbey are to relate to another human being. They will talk, ask questions, entbusiastically trying to broaden the horizons of their own tiny world. To listen sincerely and witb interest, is a valuable and much-needed service in our community. One other thing, in tbese days of stress and stain; it would help ail of us if we took time to listen to the voice of God. wben we stop Iistening to Him, the worries of life get the better of us and oui' spiritual natures dies. God speaks through His Church, in the beauty the pages of the Bible, in the counsel of a good friend. Many of our mental and physical troubles would vanisb if we would only relax and listen to tbe voice of God. But to bear what God has to say, we-must take time to be still and alone, quietly waiting on Hlm. Speak Lord, in the stillness, While I wait on Thee. Husb my heart to isten, In expectancy.
