*~--5 I~ Cluaagents. are unqwdsfied.. Local realtor is by Star story WIITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3,1979,1 PAGE 19 ups9etý By MICHAEL KNELL I Free Press Staff A local real estate broker has taken exception to a Toronto Star story of Sep- tember 22 that daims that "hundreds of uniqualified agents are flooding Metro real estate'jobs." Tony *Klompnaker,,.the manager 0f ,the W. Frank Real Estate Ltd. Office in Whitby says that the Star's claim is flot true of his agency. The Star's story said that new agents are "lhelped.by brokers to take a mandatory five week course and pass their exams, then 1le ft to fend for themselves. " Klompmaker said that his company spends anywhere from $8,000 to $10,000, a year perempl*oyee. These expenses include heat, .hydro, -advertising, telephones, signs,. promotio- nal meterials and training. Klompmaker said that any new agent coming into- his office goes through extensive mn-bouse training, after hé has passed bhis provincial examination and received bhis licence. I'Nobody goes out on their first listing or first sale without an experienced manager," he says. 1Klomnpmaker says that Frank Real Estate is very, picky about the people they hire and screen ail appli- cants carefully. 1Afte r he has interviewed a prospective salesman, he (or she) is sent to a psychologist in Toronto, at the company's expense for an apptitude test and' if> that test is'positive, only then will the company consider hiring him.-, Klompmaker says that the three- things that his com- pany looks for in people i s. "ability, general knowledge and credibility." After the agent has recei- ved his licence, Kloinpmaker'says that there are stili things that the agent must learn. "The best way to market a' house to a vendors advan- tage, " he says is> just one of these things., "E *verybody doesn't make IL"t in real estate business, he says. Klompmaker did point out that ".there are ail kinds of businesses that hire people that don't work out for one reason or another." "We invest a lot -of ime and money into a new agent- tbat's whywe're fussy about who we hire." Staffturnover is-very low, Klmpmaker says'. ,The company. bas agents who have been with them for 10 to 15 years. Klompmakerdoes have a word of advice for those people who are thinking of getting into the real estate business. "Anybody that is thinking of getting into real estatef beware of the broker who is ready to hire you 'with no qualifications and no ques- ions because the more the broker expects of you, the more you can expect from him." "They seem to be genera- lizing here (the Star and it's story) that all real estate companies are the same," Klompmaker says. "That's not true, there are a lot of good companies."
