It is the only-- one of its kind in Ontario. This course is designed to increase the capabilîties of those already, engaged in, psychiatrie nursing or to enhance the skills and know- ledge 0f 'individuals retur- ning to.the field. Developed and taught by Holly Bennett of Whitby> Psychiatrie Hospital's edu- cational 'services -depart- ment and Bonnie Ginter of Durhams College's health sciences division, the couse is co-sponsored by the hospi- tai and college. Graducates have testified as to the effectiveness of the program. Before *designing -this- specialized coursce, extensive research was undertaken'ini order to, determine what educational resources were currently available in'the mental healthý field. y0n the basis 0f this, ý, comprehen- sive course was extablished in response to the increasing demand for specialised skills in psychiatrie nursing. Combining theory, and clinical application, the 16 week course provides a total learning experience for part- icipants. Areas 0f -study in- clude comparative theories of personality development; predisposing and precipita- ting factors; crisis interven- tion theories and techniques; nursing proce ss, therapeu- tic modalities, counselling, therapeutie groups, comm 'u- nity, psychiatry, outreach programs and -professional, 'development-.-Clinical expe- rience is provided in a- variety of mental health care agencies. Prior to the com mence- ment of the first course, approval was granted by the Council of Regents, a gover- ning body responsible for- the sanctioning of al 'courses developed at the commnunity college level. While.the theo- retical content of the pro- gram remains unchanged, some modifications will be made on an- on-going basis according to the input recei- ved from the clinical facili- ties, the course participants, and new iniformation as researched and pub lished.
