PA£-GE 10, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1979, WHITBY FREE PREss Ontaio'senergy is .electrieity says transport minister By MICHAEL KN ELL Free Press Staff "We would oppose the dis- continuance of rail service to the northern parts of Dur-. lam 'Region," Janes Snow, Ontario Minister of Trans- portation and Comnmunica- tions said in Whitby last week. This was'in response to a rumnor that both Canadian Pacifie Rgilway,(CR) and Canadian National (CNR) would discontinue service to the smallerý harà lets in the rural areas north of Whitby. Snow did- say, -however, thatT-'rn flot aware 0f any appflication to,'di scontinue service." Snow was in Whitby to open the grade separation on Regional Road 23 (Boundary Road) at -the Whitby-Ajax townline and the Canadian Pacifie tracks. Rail is certainly a major mode of transport'," Snow said. But it .can't serve al areas." He pointe& out that mnvs thani 50 Pler cent 0f ail freight movement in Ontario is b truck. sb But with the rise ini the cost of, fuel, Ontarjo rnay see greater use -of the railway, Snow said. .Snow said that'the present trend is have the trailers moved by piggybaek. That is, the, truck drives -the trailer to a railway, station where the trailer is put on a fiat car, taken to its destina- tion and then hauled to its specifie drop-off- -point by another truck. With the-cost of fuel'going up,, we should - see' more piggybacking," Snow said. Snow did note that "truck transport is so convient."1 This convinience- is brought about because of the excellent system of ýroads and highways in the pro- vince, «Snow, said. "However,. the niost eco- nornne transportation' 0f goods» is 'by, water,ý" Snow said. m Recently, some Whitby councillors have said that more industry. could be brought into the town if there was a reduction in the truck- ing tariffs. The MetroToronto Truck- ing Zone ends- at the Ajax- WhitbY boundary. 1 don't see how you could expect a reducltion," Snow said. 'mr not optimistic that there' will be a reduction, " he said. Snow said. this would' be especially s0 as the trucking industry experienees higher costs iii fuel and the eost of. paying dr ivers. Snow doubts that any kind of provincial subsidy1 would be made 'for energycosts. Snow said that there is one bright spot in the dismal Ontario energy scene. "One of -the great. things Ontario has going for> it is the abundance' 0f'eleetrical energy," he said.' "It's just like having money in the bank," Snow .said. As gas and oil go up in price, Snow says that there ,will be an even greater, demand for electrical energy. "I1t's the only energy resource we have," he said. In the present discussions with Albertâ-Snow said that Ontario really does not have "I'm not sure we have any- thing that is a great bargain- igtool,", Snowsaid. Even the shipping industry on' the 'Grat Lakes, gives Ontario no ý'advantage beca'uýýse goods can also b shippe d by sea fromn British Columbia, Sniow said. "We have a capable road building industrY," he said. Assumning continued growth in air -traffic, a Pickering airport may 'be' necessary, he said. "We» should be keeping our options open so-, when the time cornes, Pickering can be built," Snow said. - He'added that the facility should not' be built "ný'ot today, anyways."1 The Canadian movement for personal fitness. oair Paiui Our "pro** stylîsts know, ail the iatest and grea*telst in haïr c5à re and tashion.
