Eight year old Cindy is having another asthmatic attâck. Jolted out 0f'a deep sleep, Cindy's mother makes her way wearily across the hall, repeating a now famni- liar pattern. Will this attack end in anothçr dash to the Enier- gency Department? She thinks back over many other frightening, sleepless nights, and wonders just howlong. the fatigue, frustration and anxiety will continue. Cindy's problem is flot unique. There are at least haif a million known asthma- tics in Canada, and the nun-, bers are increasing. Becau e asthma is a chronic condition, involving, many different factors, it must be deait with on a daily basis and at the family level. If not kept in perspective, its psycho-soci al impact on the family unit may be devasta- ting, particularly if the asthmatic child begins to use asthmas as a way of manipu- lating other family members. The Family Asthma Pro- grams offered by Durham Region Lung Association aim to break this cycle of fear and anxiety, through parent education and group support. The next scheduled Course will begin on Sunday, September l6th, at the Iro- quois Park Arena, Whitby, running for seven consecu- tive Sundays, froni 10:00 a.m. to noon.
