COMMUNITY HEALTH LIAISON COMMITTEE This committee, chaired by Councillor Ken Matheson of Pickering, was established late last year to consider amongst other things the roles of the District Health Council and the Regional Board of Health in planning for health promotion in the Region. Councillor Matheson sits on both the District Health Council and the Board of Health. Other members are Shirley Pyke, Pickering, of the Board of Health, Gloria Tuck, Oshawa from the district Health Council, Dr. Jean Gray, the Medical Officer of Health and Mick Peters, the District Health Council's Executive Director. Recommendations in the report addressed the function and structure of the-Board of Health as these affect planning for "health" as opposed to "sickness" services. ANNUAL MEETING .At the meeting, the District Health Council also decided to hold its Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 21 at 8p.m. in the Town of Whitby Meeting Hall. "In addition to a review of the past year's activities" said Council Chairman, Henry Polak, "we have invited representa- tives of the Thunder Bay District Health Council to be our guest speakers." The Thunder Bay District Health Council has developed a major strategy for health promotion in the city, leading up to the Canada Summer Games in 1981.. "It is my belief" said Mr. Polak, "that the following adoption of our Community Health Liaison Committee's report and discussion at our Annual Meeting on Health Promotion, we may, in collaboration with the Board of Health, other health care providers and interested businesses and individuals, be able to develop some strategies to encourage better health MEMBERSHIP Henry Polak, Council Chairman for 1978/79 was unani- mously reappointed for another year commencing June 15. New members of the District Health Council have been recommended by the Council's Membership Search Commit- tee to Health Minister Dennis Timbrell for appointment. "The new appointments" said Council Chairman, Henry Polak, will help to balance the membership and will specifically address a perceived lack of representation from the Towns of Newcastle and Whitby this past year" he continued. Approval f the recommendations is expected in time for the Annual Meeting. The Council meeting adjourned at 10:20 p.m. Meetings are held every month - usually the fourth Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Council Office in the Whitby Municipal Building. Theregular June meeting will not be held; instead the Couneil's Annual Meeting is scheduled for 8 p;m., Thursday, June 21 in the Whitby Municipal Building. Further information can be obtained at the Council Office, YMCA offers French camp for another season Camp Francais is a -day camping program offered by the Durham Region Family Y.M.C.A. Located in the Heber Down Conservation Area, this camp allows youth' to develop and/or enhance their French comprehension and language skills while enjoying the benefits of a camping program. Designed for children ages 5 to 12 years, Camp Francais stresses fun, meeting new friends, developing camp craft skills and enjoying the outdoors whiletinstruction is given, in the French language. Thé fluent staff is chosen in co-operation with the Dur- ham Board of Education. All members of our staff are bilingual and experienced in the outdoors. During the initial stages of each camp session, empha- sis is placed upon compre- hension skills. When a ~suit- able level of comprehension has been achieved, specific language -skills are intr'o- duced. The program is designed so that any child with or without French lang- uage skills can be accommo- dated and enjoy an enriching program. All camp sessions are two weeks in length and bussing is provided to and from camp. All children may also participate in a one hour swim at the end of each camping day and an optional overnight during the second week of camp. The collection is from Canadian Industries Limited, and includes the work of John Boyle, Jack Chambers, Alex Colville, Jean-Paul Lemieux, Christopher Pratt, Jack .Shadbolt, Harold Town and Sally Wildman. The collec- tion will be on exhibit until June 24, 1979. June 24 at 2:30 p.m. there will be a selection of films about some of the artists LISTEN TO COUNTRY MUSIC represented in the CIL exhibition at the Whitby Arts Station Gallery. Among the artists featured in the films are Jack Chambers, Ken Danby, WilliamKurele1, Ernest Lidner, Alfred Pellan and Jean-Paul Lemieux. The films will be shown at the Station Gallery.
