FIVE DAYS LEFT Let's put Whitby' on the map - turn out to vote. How you vote is your choice but do vote. Canadians often ignore good news. The-state of the country does not bear out what we are hearing from the gloom and doom experts who write for public consumption. Do not allow the so called experts to let you throw up your hands in despair. So instead of predicting death-let's look for life. We have a strong vibrant country. Let us join to-gether for the good of all. Let's give and not take without thought of the consequences. The grasping·hands often move faster than the speed of light. There has been an incredible upturn in business cycles which appeared this past fall and winter helped by the cheap dollar and favourable tax climate. The annual increase of industrial production is more than 10 per cent. Manufacturer's new orders in February were an amazing 25 per cent higher than a year earlier and manufacturer's shipments 23 per cent higher. The stock market is strong and producing. One cannot argue this point when a dividend cheque doubles in a short time. Canada is the third largest investor in U.S. capital for direct investment from Canada to the U.S. This exceeds U.S. investment to Canada. This is as it should be, monies flowing from one country to another. It is all not one-sided as we are often led to believe. Unemployment is high. There are many reasons and some are sad to relate. We wilf always have unemployed with us; for want of a better word, the unfortunates and the sick. There are those who refuse topick fruit, so we have to import sometimes thousands of people from other lands to do what we will not do. Does this make sense? This is a fat society. Can -you expect maximum pay for minimum experience? Inflation is just as responsible for high income as it is for high taxes and food - prices. You can't have inflating income without inflating prices. There are many now in specialized fields. This often makes for great difficulty when job hunting -·there are simply not enough openings. Maybe in this new world of ours we need a whole new concept when it comes to education. This of course is soley a provincial responsibility not Federal. Our population has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years. This is a whole new ball game - let's keep up with it and not dwell on the past. Rethink and lets look to the future. This is one of the most rewarding countries in the world to live in lets make it even greater. Until next week, Ruth Chambers. 728-2103.
