Tape Can Be Handy Tool for Do-It-Yourselfer It's tape to the rescue for the many do-it-yourselfers who think of tape as an all- purpose tool for home repairs. Many home handy- men - and handywomen - have discovered tape tricks that give a new twist to old jobs, while making home. repairs easier. One tool that's becorniing as common as a hammer and screwdriver in the home repair kit is Ductape, that wide, gray utility tape that can do dozens of jobs .around the house. Developed shortly after World War II by Arno Adhesive Tapes, Inc., this pressure-sensitive tape has been used by the millions of yards to seal heating and air conditioning ducts, and is now gaining widespread popularity as a consumer item. "Ductape is the answer for the do-it-yourselfer's need for an all-around, heavy-duty workshop and household tape," says Terry Mather, national sales manager for Arno's con- sumer division. "While many homeowners do use the tape for airtight sealing of ductwork and air con- ditioning connections, it also has an almost infinite number of uses around the house." Ever try to paint a wooden staircase around a carpet runner that leaves the edge of the wood exposed? Ductape can help you keep the paint from seeping into the carpet. Simply tear off a tape strip the length of the carpet edge on each step and riser. Then apply the tape to the carpet so that half the tape width is on the carpet. A bottle opener inakes a good tool to help you tuck the edge of the tape beneath the carpet edge. Repeat this for each step, overlapping the ends of the tape as you go so that the carpet edge is covered in one continuous strip of tape: Then paint, and remove the tape as soon as the paint is dry. Because this kind of tape makes an airtight, *ater- proof seal, it's àlso perfect for sealing doors and windows; applying instla- DO-IT-YOURSELFER'S AID ... If your clothes-dryer vent pipe is leaking, Ductape will seal the'gaps. It will even make emergency repairs on cracked or broken glass or mirrors. Bars on windows may make you feel more secure within your home, but be sure they don't leave you without an emergency exit. An inexpensive decor- trick is greenery, and.an ar- ray of real or artificial flow- ers will also do much to evoke a pleasing effect. Painting "Dos and Don'ts" DON'T paint when the temperature is below 50°. Paint doesn't flow easily at low temperatures. DO use good paint. It flows easily and smoothly, costs less in the long run because you save time and labor. DON'T try to paint out- side when it's foggy or damp - paint won't last on wet surfaces. DO test paint for dryness before applying a second coat! DON'T paint over paint that has cracked or peeled. DO use good brushes and supply yourself with the many aids available ... they'll make the job go a lot faster. Home Improvemenis Planning ahead on home improvements keeps your house in good trim, modern and pleasant. It's easier on the family budget, too. A five-year program makes good sense for many, as it takes into considera- tion growing youngsters and changing family needs. "The way to maintain a home's living and actual values," says one expert, "is to keep it up. One year, it may mean buying a new liv- ing room suite: another, re- painting the exterior; an- other, installing air-condi- tioning." The consultant suggests a family conference to plan a five-year home improve- ment program. This should result in decisions and a list.
