PAGE 31 LIBERALS OPEN WIHTBY COMMITTEE ROOM Liberal MP for Ontario Riding, Norm Cafik, was joined by some of his supporters at the opening of his committee rooms in Whitby in the Brock Mary Building Iast week. Mr. Caf ik was the second candidate for the May 22 federal election to open his committee rooms in Whitby. The Progressive Conservatives and the Liberals have established committee rooms so far, but not the NDP. Free Press Photo Finance mov ges back to committee The move of the regio nal finance department to Oshawa, which was approved-by Durh am Regio- nal Council March 21, was referred back to the manage- ment committee for a fur- ther report last Wednesday. Oshawa Councillor Alan Dewar and Oshawa Mayor Jirn Potticary moved. that the council'proceed to lease space in the Durham Towers at Bond and CentreStreets in downtown Oshawa. The lease would have been for 51 months. The vote resulted in a 14-14 tie, ýand Regional Chairman Walter Beath cast the decid- ing vote against proceeding with the lease. Foilowing the defeat of the motion to lease space in the Dürhamn Towers, Ajax Mayor Clark, Mason ýand Newcastle Mayor Garnet Rickard moved that the matter be referred back té the management committee for a further report. This motion was carried. Whitby Mayor Jim Gart- shore and Councillor Bob Attersley moved an amend- ment that the management committee be authorized to consider any' other .rentai of fers presented, The amendment, also was carried. Only two councillors were absent, Gerry Emmn of Whitby and William Clark of Pickering.. The regional finance de- partment is presently located in the headquarters building on Rossland Road and two portables behind the building. Concern has been expressed by the finance committee about the need for more space and greater security precautions at the finance department. The proposed -move to 'Oshawa has been a political issue for the past two months, with the Whitby Art auction There was a great deal of interest and excitement as the Piyah Chapter of Hadassah-Wizo held its third annual Art Auction xecently. Close to 200 people filled the dining roomn of the Paul Giovis Gallery, in Oshawa. Convenor Carole Pockey welcomed everyone 'and introduced Mrs. Ruth Milne, Administrator, Community Activities for General Motors of Canada, who gave the opening remarks. Thanks were expressed to Paul and Olana Giovis for the donation of their restau- rant for the evening and for their co-operation and assis- representatives expressing concern that if the finance department goes to, Oshawa, it might never. return to Whitby. The monies raised'Will be used for medi- cal and educational services for women and children in Israel, and the work of many local and regional artists wasp;oxoted.
