WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25, 1979, PAGE 17 Retirement home approved in principle but height bothers some councillors Council's Administrative Committee at its meeting iast week requested a further report on the pro- posed retirement home to be located on the south east corner of Brock Street and Manning Road, be presented to the Committee in two weeks. The Committee received a report from the planning staff which pointed out that King Street Sehool is planning a 125th anniversary celebration and reunion on Saturday, September 29. It is hoped that a great many formier teachers and pupils will plan to attend. 1'lere has been a school on the present King Street site since 1854. One Sunday in 1920, when plans for the present building were well on the way, the former Ftenry Street Schoolhouse m ysteriously burned. Classes had to carry on in chui'ch halls and various local 'ons around town until the present building was opened in 1921. The first principal of the new school was R.A.Sennett, who is now retired, and living in Brooklin. Program plans for Sept. 29 are being made by. an active committee. Sug- gestions and names of former staff and students would be appreciated. It would be necessary to pass a zoning by-law amend- ment before the proposai could be proceeded with. It was pointed out that the proposed retirement home wouid be weil cared for. Science fairs are at separate schools Science fairs wili be fea- tured this week at two Whitby separate schools as part of Education Week. There wiil be a science fair at St. John's School on Giffard Street Thursday fromn 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and at St. Paul's Schooi on Garrard Road Friday at 10:30 a.m. The theme of Education Week for the separate schools is "New Realities." wouid be four storeys high a measurement of approxi- mateiy 39 feet. The existing R2 zoning on the site aiiows for a maxi- mum building height of 40 feet. Mrs. Kathleen Chung of Bradley Drive and the neigh- bours in the Ivanic Court area objected to the four storey height of the proposed building. In her letter to the Plan- ning Department- Mrs. Chung said while she "1firmly believes that each neigh- bourhood shouid include some form of housing for senior citizens, " she strongiy objects to the height of the building proposed for the vacant lot across the street fromn her home. "Four storeys is too high," she said, as she asked ini her letter "have we finally escaped the shadow of Toronto's apartment build- ings, only to find ourselves back in the same situation again?" Councilior Barry Evans agreed with the neighbours of the Ivanic Court and Bradley Drive area and their objections to a higher build- ing where people on the upper leveis could "look down on the private homes." Councillor Evans said that "ta retirement home is des- ireable in that location." He beiieved that a iower type building would be more agreeable as "four storeys is too high and wiii be a deter- rent to the appearance of the area." He agreed in principle with a reduction in the height from four storeys to a possi- ble three storeys. ONTARIO LIC. Councilior Bob Attersiey said he would "'hate to see row housing in there." He '"would sooner see a develop- ment like this (the retire- ment home) than row hous- ing; but at a lower height."1 He said he would sooner see the proposed develop- ment than row housing as "it would be better for the neighborhood than row housing," in tus opinion. He wondered if the height of -the building could be aitered "to a lower and more acceptable level." Councilior Evans put forth a motion that the retirement home be approved in princi- pie but alter the height to a aceeptable level so, it could be acceptable to the people already there. The Committee passed the motion with the various memnbers saying that the Committee "is trying to look at the concerns of the peopie, that the height does bottier them," and requested a "f urther__report in two weeks." The residents in the Man- ning Road-Brock Street area wili be notified of the time of the next public hearing on the retirement home proposai.
