Tom Hughes, Executive Vice-President of the Ontario Humane Society, had high praise for the life- turne care centre for cats recently estabiished'at the Whitby shelter. "One of the saddest cases is a person with cats who can't take care of them any more," he said. "There is no reason cats should be put down becausesomeone dies or goes into a nursing home. Ail we need is enough money to care for them." Mr. Hughes expiained how a woman who had to go into a nursing home had provided the Ontario Humane Society with enough money to care for her 46 cats for the rest of their lives. This wauld amount ta about $200 per cat per year, he said. It matters more ta the people ta have their cats protected," he said poiniting out that the owner of the cats is a happy persan now that her cats are cared for by the society. Mr. Hughes urged aider people with animais ta con- suit with the, Ontario Humane Society before miak- i ng a wili regarding their animais. He gave one exampie where a woman hac wiied her cats ta the humane soci- eity -and then changed her wiil ta have the cats for in her home for the rest of their lives. .This would cause the- es- tate money ta be used up very quickly, he said, and the cats could not get proper care. He related how the oldest cat, kept with those in a, basement, had drowned in a' sump pump.
