WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 21, 1979, PAGE 3 Downtowvn -Whitby J Today 1 have to pick up an old topic again and beat it arqund for a while. Two topics, actually - bus service and taxes. As you may have read in this newspaper last week, Lhere wil shortly be a forum on transportation held in Whitby. For the sake of ail concerned, you downtown business people must get out to this forum and push as hard as you can for a bus service. In spite of ail the plans for the dlowntown that are being developed, the downtown'cannot 'actuâlly .progress without a bus service. Developers cannot be expected to build any commercial space here in the downtown unless we cari offer a way for people to get in from, the outlying regions and make use of'the commercial facilities in the downtown area. I know that *Tve doubtless beaten this old topic haîf to death in the past, but unless we get some positive input from those who may not only directly benefit from a bus service, but ailso from those whose taxes wilI likely increase as a..result,, decisions would be made which affect the, future. of the downtown- for many years, and without our concern we. may be faced with a system incompatible with our needs, too expensive- or no transportation system at ail. 1 have always advocated a bus system for Whitby. But. I've aiso advocated common sense in choosing thetype of service we get. Now, 1 can't see a system that will cost each and every person in Whitby an extra $35 to $50 yearly in taxes. In addition, we will of course, have to psy, a fare to use this. system.. Enough is enough. Taxes- are. too high already. We don't need a further burden. But we do need a'bus system. Somewhere between these two poles there has to 'be a reasonable alternative, and I'm working looking to.Lhe people in the municipal building toprovide us with, that alternative. It was encouraging to see 50 many people at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon a week Monday, A speciai word of thanks to ail of the new members who took the time to corne out." Do your best to get out to some of the events in the upcoming Winter Carnivai. The Jaycees have spent a lot of time and effort organizing the Carnival this year, and -We owe them our support. While this doesn't have anything specific to do with> the downtown, what happens anywhere in Whitby happens'to ail of us, so let's get out and support those who are making Whitby a better place. In closing, if the weather is 30 below zero, can spring be far behind? Probabiy. Sure there's no way Jean Drapeau ýwili come down from Montreai and put a roof over the town, welve got to put up with it. What fun. But don't feel. badiy.ý You could live in Ottèr CreekWhere youhave to go out toget your mail every day in this weather, and pay a very large amount of'tax dollars (and even more this year, I understand) for facilities imost of the rest of the town aiready'has.
