The commendation had been received by council from the Operations Com- mitee that the Public Works Department be authorized to hire an adult school crossing guard for the- intersection. Council-advised the Works Department to hire an adult crossing guard for this inter- section as soon as possible. Last November, a letter was received by Mayor Jim Gartshore from School Trus- tee David Sims. He had received a petition containing 57 signatures from the parents and rate- payers in the area served by the Walnut-Cochrane Street intersection concerning safety of the E.A. Fairman Public School students. The petition pointed out there is an increasing amount of traffic using the intersection. Of special concern to the parents and residents was and is the fact "that many drivers appear not to heed the four way stop signs". They requested that a cros- sing guard be obtained. This intersection controlled as it is by the four way stop signs is termed "a hazardous in- tersection for young children to cross. As he forwarded the origi- nal copy of the petition which had been sent to him, Mr. Sims said he supported the request for the appointment of a crossing guard. The Public Works Depart- ment states the Durham Regional Police have made a count of the cars and school children and fror their re- sults it is assumed that there is a necessity for providing a crossing guard. As the Department has been made aware of the situation for some time pro- vision *was made in the Public Works Budget for the inclusion of a crossing guard.
