The ghost of those who objected s0 strenuoushy to a $50,000 levy was all to evident at the meeting of the Board of Management for the redevelopment area ast week, and decisions made refleet a great deal of caution at this stage of the game. Regarding the ehection of officers for the immediate term, 1 %vas elected Chairinan; AI Kirby, Vice-Chairman; and Sharon lIewson, Secretary-Treasurçr. Those.,0f you who were around for discussions on the business assessment last year will remnember that there was a great deal of opposition to beautifying by nieans of this sort, and the Mainstreet1 programme was treated in a negative manner for this reason, among others. It was also established- thatý 50 per cent of the repayment of the loan was to be taken yearly from funds made available, to the B3oard through the assessrnent, which would leave very littie operating capital from this source. While monies from the loan could be used for other things, suchas promotion, it was decided that, while further information would be obtained, the Mainstreet programme would not suit our- needs. Additional information from'the governmnent proved this 'as true. The general att itude concerning capital expenditures and development also affected discussions on the budget for the 1979 Board. It was decided not to earmark funds for development (iLe., planting of trees and shrubs and on street furniture), which by extension a maintenance budget was therefore unnecessary. The distribution of thXe $1O,000 avail- able during 1979 was then broken down into the following categories:- Promotion $6000< Community Relations $500, Traffic and Parking $700 Information $1400 Administration $400 Contingency $1000 This is tentative, based on firm quotes from various media sources on costs in each of the various categories. It is the responisibility of the Chairman to have complete quotes available for the next meeting on such matters as advertising and promotion, in order that the budget may be finalized and presented to Council. The B3oard appreciated the presence of the representa.tives from the Free Press and News Advertiser who attended--to offer their views on the direction which the Board should take, as well as a dvice froml representatives of both the town, professional sector and retail sector. It is to be stressed that all meetings of the board are open and anyone with either an opinion to offer or who desires further information is welcome to attend. The next meeting will be held on December 6 at 8 p. m. in meeting. roomn 1 at the Municipal Building. At that tirne the budget will be discussed as well as ideas on architectural maintenance and a tabloid. Areas of co-operation between this Board and both the Chamber of Commerce and the Retail Merchants Association will also be explored. Anyone who wishes to be put on the agenda might caîl John Roberts at 668-1221. It's good to know that things are happening here. It's also good to know that we have. the support of the media in the area, and a special thank you is offered to Mike Burgess and Robin Lyon of the Free Press for the space they gave the downtown nierchants in h1ast week's paper.
