PAGE 8, W E AY, NVENM 22,1978, MW TYFREEPRFS Whitby DowntownD By John -Roberts congatuations to Barry Evan s, the new Centre W ard Councillor. His election shows wihatdeterminàtion and hard' work can do. Mlay I offer my personal congratulati <ons and my support in every endeavour concerning the downtown. In a littie more than a week the Christmas parade wil launch the Christmas promotion period for the downtown. Look for a number of new thifigs thisyear - letter boxes in various locations for letters to Santa; aIl will be answered. Decorations downtown up earlier this year;,we thank the town for their co-operation in this matter. A. retail merchants' float in the parade, with Mrs. Santa Claus and Chiclets for the kids;' for this we must thank Adams Brands and Collins publishers in Toronto for thei r generous donations. Many stores open Friday nights and a number even, open, Thursday nights after December 2, and quite a few stores open every night the last week before Christmas-, there are a greater num ber of stores open T hursday andFridays even, now for shopping conven-. ience. Look for choirs fromn local high schools, churches and other organizations singing in the. downtown areas during the. Christmas promotion. This will flot only offer some exposure,, for the choirs, but will also enhance the Christmas spirit throughout the entire town. Watch for ads in' the local newspapers. The downtown merchants have a lot to offer this Christmnas, flot only in a commercial sense but also in regards to. personal service and a pleasant shopping environment. Thýey will be involved in a draw for gift certificates wortb a total of $100, broken down into 5 glft certificates of $20 each to bc used at the store or stores of the winner's choice, as well as other smaller draws on Saturdays throughout the promotion, perigd. But this isn't aIl. Look for this spirit of co-operation to continue into -the New Year. There will likely be a'merchant's newsletter published bi-monthly containing information on the downtown, bargains, gossip, upcoming events and the lîke. This' is still very much in the planning stage, and Gail Patriarche is to be congratulated for her fine idea, in this regard. But the point is that things are finally happening in downtown Whitby. It' shows., So get' out, to' the Christmas parade, then have a lo'ok around. For those of yOU who haven't been downtown for awhile, you might be surprised.
