SMr. Hewis was a member of a noted Whitby family which earriedon a butcher trade in the town for more than 80 years. Big contracts for antennas Andrew Antenna Co. Ltd., which basoperated a plant on Beech Street for 25 years, was recently awarded a contract worth $220,905 by the federal government. The contract is for 20 earth station antennas which send and receive signals from a Canadian satelite. The contract calîs for ship- ment before the end of March. The Whitby company bas been asked to construct 16 10-foot antennas and four 15-footers. The antennas will tune in on the new Anik B communi- cations satellite which Will be launched fromn Cape Kennedy in mid-Decemnber. The Hewis butcher sbop was in several locations in the i^9th century, and in. 1914 the *Hewis family, purchased the old McMillan block on Brock Street North where Shorty's Cigar Store is presently located. The butcher shop was at'various times in the nortb and then the south store of the block, before William Hewis retired in 1939. The Hewis famiîly, however, retained ownership of the building until they sold it in 1973. In'his later years, Mr. Hewis was often interviewèd by newspaper reporters, and had a remarkable memory for events of his early years in Whitby. He became somewhat of a celebrity, being the oldest native resident of the town. Shortly b0fore is death, the author of this column visited Mr. Hewis, and heartl him tellI of how he, remembered seeing horses being exercised on Dundas Street at the time the Queen's Plate was run in Whitby in 1870. Mr. ewis had been five years old at. that, time. Mr. Hewis died at Whitby on Feb. 11, 1964 at the age of 98. At that time he was the oldest member of the Oddfellows Lodge. Known as "Whitby's.
