WHITBY FREE PR~ESS, WEDNESDAY' OCTOBER 18, 1978, PAGE 9 di ~Sidewalk -work ..begins 'l amn glad we finally have some sidewalkprogrammes in motion,' Mayor Jim Garfshore said at a recent council meeting. The Council has approved the construction of asidewalk on the east side of Byron Street north from Walnut Street f0 Chestnut street and on the west side of Centre street north from Dundas streef f0 Mary Street. In the Brooklin area a sidewalk will be constructed on the east side of Princess street, from Winchester Street to Cassels Road. The sidewalk programme did not go through without some objections fromn the residents on Byron street north. The Operations Commit tee reported that the problems concerned drainage rather than with the condition of the, sidewalks now ini use. The solution to the problem would be the reconstruction of Byron Street f0 an urban standard with stornrsewers and curli and gutters would eliminate the drainage problem a report stated. It was poinfed ouf the new sidewalk was designed f0 fit in wifh the idea of bringing Byron Street north up to urban standards. That is the reason the new location for the present sidewaik and grades were clinsen. The -, Comniiffee recommnended that between Mary Street and Walnuf Street the sidewalks be nof replaced and thaf the 'recon- struction of this street (Byron) be considered in the near future.'
