SEPTEMBER 27, 1978, PAGE 13 V8DIESEL OSHIAWA, Ont. -- The new 4.3 litre (260 CID) V-8 diesel engine joins the 1979 Oldsmobile engine ineup and the 5.7 litre (350 CID) diesel introduced last year. This new engine miakes diesel power available on 19 of Oldsmobile's 24 modesi. The 4.3 litre <260 CID) V-8 diesel is offered on the Cutlass coupe and sedan series. The'larger V-8 is available on the Cutlass station wagons, Eighty- Eights, Ninety-Eights, customn cruiser and the Torona do. The 4.3 litre diesel, like its predecessor, has a pre- combustion chamber added to minimize emissions, noise and sinoke. Inside each pre- chamber there, is an eiectric glow plug to assist starting the engine. Ail 1979 diesel-powered Oldsmobiles include the newest diesel innovation -- the fast-glow systemn. The wait/start-time has been nearly eliminated with this systemn. At -lBdegrees C it takes approximnately six, seconds for warmnup before starting the engine. On the diesel engines a fuel inj ection pump controls inginîtion by timing and nietering the amnount of fuel delivered to each cylinder. The pump performs for the diesel essentially the ,samne functions as the- distributor And carburetor in a gasoline engine. A remote air cleaner tuning chamber has been added to reduce intake noise. The- plastic resonator mounts on the side of the engine and connects to the air cleaner by a flexible hose. Added' body insula tion on the -front of the dash keeps the passenger compartment quiet. The GM diesel engines meet current emission standards without a catalytie converter or EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve because emissions are controled within the diesel combustion process itself. A PCV (positive crankcase, ventilation) valve is the only emission device on the, Oldsmobile diesel cars. The overail width of the new Toronado is 1811 mm (71.3 in.), a reduction of 221 mm (87 in.) The exterior appearance of the 1979 Toronado is highligbted by a bold front end. The rectangular shape of the grille openings is repeated in the dual head- Iamps and balanced by long horizontal park and turn laînos. Toronado the front end panel above the grille. From the side, the Toronado has a formai roof design and the stationary small rear quarter- windows a re covered when either the landau or full vinyl top is ordered.
