He attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London from 1953 to 1957, before emigrating to Canada in 1958. Since 1964 he has resided in New York City. This exhibition was organized and circulated by the Art Gallery of Ontario Extension Services and loaned courtesy of the Isaacs Gallery, Toronto. POLISH CANADIANS EXHIBITION An exhibition of paintings entitled "The Polish Canadians," by William Kurelek, will be held at the Whitby Arts Station Gallery Oct. 6 to 29, with an opening reception Oet. 6 at 8:30 p.m. The collectiori shown was a gift of the Polish Alliance of Canada and Wintario to the Art Gallery of Hamilton. William Kurelek, one of Canada's most noted modern painters, was born in Alberta in 1927 of immigrant parentage, and raised as a child of the Depression, in Manitoba. He graudated from the University of Manitoba in 1949 and further pursued his artistic leanings with studies in Mexico and Ontario. He left for England in 1952 and apprenticed as a picturen framer while continuing his painting. The 26 works in the "Polish Canadians" series comprise the fifth and final of a series of immigrant pioneer groups he depicted before his death in November 1977. M.D. CARNIVAL A carnival to raise funds to fight Muscular Dystrophy will be held Sept. 16 at Florence Heard School, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The carnival is being conducted by the staff of the Whitby McDonald's Restaurant. MERCHANTS' MEETING The Whitby Retail Merchants' Association will hold its anaugural meeting tonight in Committee Room One at the Municipal Building, on Rossland Road, at 7:30 p.m. The meeting is being called to discuss the aims and objectives of this new association, member- ship and future plans. All Whitby retail merchants are urged to attend. ENGLISH CLASSES English classes for new Canadians will begin again Sept. 26 at St. Mark's United Church House, at the corner of Byron and Colborne. The program, held every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Recreation and the Durham Board of Educa- tion, and is free to those who want to learn or improve their English. AUTHOR VISITS Children from four to twelve years of age will delight in a reading by Canadian author, Madeline Kronby on Saturday, September 23 at 10:30 a.m. when she comes to the Whitby Public Library. MAGOOK is a national children's publication put out by McClelland and Stewart of which Ms. Kronby is Public Relations Director. Ms. Kronby's book "A Secret in My Pocket" has appeared in this 'magazine-book'.
