WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1978, PAGE 7 Brian Winter's Historical Whitby MODEL SCHOOL Today from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. there is a reunion for pupils of the Whitby Model School prior to 1935, at the Florence Heard School, which is the present name of the building. As was mentioned in this column last week, the Model School (also known as Dundas Street School became a County Model School fçr the training of teachers in 1880 and served as such until the Normal School in Toronto took over the training of teachers some 40 years later. Old Board of Education reports in the Whitby Historical Society Archives give an idea of what the operation of the Model School was like in its early days. The Board of Education took steps in 1881 to have teachers taking their training at the Model School pay fees for that privilege and in, 1882, $10 was collected from that source. The Ontario Government and Ontario County supplied grants, totalling $300, and there were four teachers constantly employed at the school. Hello All! Mayor Jim Potticary of Oshawa has announced he plans to arrange a meeting between the city's executive committee and Whitby Council's management committee to discuss industrial land promotion. The proposal came after the resignation of Bob Nicol as director of Development for the Region of Durham and the resignation of Whitby's Regional Develop- ment Off icer Richard. Spence. Mr. Nicol will stay on with the region as a land sales- man, and Mr. Spence, has taken a position with Peel Region. Another regional develop- ment officer, Mondeau Beauchamp, a former clerk of Ajax, has considered resigning from the depart- ment, but may stay to help reorganize its industrial promotion. Mr. Beauchamp has declined to state whether he will seek * the director's position. vacated hy Mr. Nicol. In light of recent develop- ments the City of Oshawa' tabled a motion to recondiser a decision not to appoint an industrial development officer for the city. ASV1NM In 1883 the Model School was under the principalship of James Brown and attracted a number of teachers-in-training from all parts of Ontario County. Like the teachers-in-training, the pupils of the Model School had to pay fees to attend school, and revenue from this source in 1883 amountd to $100. The Board of Education reported that 16 teachers took their training at the Model School in 1885, and the fees paid by them, along with the provinical and county grants, substantially reduced the expense of the school to the ratepayers of Whitby. The Whitby Model School by this time was becoming known as one of the principal aducation centres of the province, according to the reports. By this time there were three permanent teachers at the school, with a special teacher from the Collegiate Institute to instruct the senior division of teachers-in-training. Upon completion of their training, these teachers received certificates from the Ontario County School Board, which qualified them to teach in other schools throughout Ontario. In 1888 there were 19 teachers-in-training at, the Model Scho l, all of whom were successful in passing the exam- inations for their certificates. Of these, 15 had secured employment by the end of their training. The report for 1888 states that '.'owing to the prevalence of diphtheria in the easterly part of the town and the alleged unsanitary condition of this school, the flooring of the junior form was replaced and the room reseated during the summer with the most improved style of seats and a thorough investigation made into the condition of the premises." appreciated. Every little bit helps. Jerry Lewis would thank you, and all his kids say thanks too. Happenings! Friday September 8 - 7:45 p.m. Senior Citizen FAII Season Card Game starts. The report states that 13 teachers took their training in 1890, eight less than in 18M9. This reduction was due to the fact that only three Collegiate Institute Pupils went to the Model School to train as teachers, instead of the usual larger number. Many remained at the Collegiate to continue their studies. The number of trainees rose to 16 in 1891. This number increased to 24 in 1896, indicating a greater interest in teaching as a profession. By 1907 there was a proposai by the government to abolish Model Schopls, but it was not carried out, and the Whitby Model School trained 17 teachers that year, 12 of whom found employment upon graduation. The exact date of thë abolition of Model Schools is not known by the Historical Society, but after the training of teachers stopped at Whitby, Dundas Street School became an ordinary public school like the others in the town.
