There wiîî be six training sessions per week at the outset. Others may be added as the tempo of activîties increases. While most of the swimmers from last season will be back, the Club is keen to recruit a substantial number of new members in order to strengthen the teamn numericalî1y. Swimmers in al age groups are weîcomed; there is, however, a special need to increase the number of swîimmers, aged fourteen and over. The idea will be to teach these youngsteres how to swim but to coach them in stroke improvement, fitness and stamnina. Swirnmers with this experience usually find Red Cross badges a snap. They will not be on a heavy diet of training for competi- tive swimming'; rather, ernphasis wiîI be on technique and on the enjoy- ment of swimming. Many swimmers and parents seem to be inhibited by the' term competitive swixnming, imagining that one must already by a Beck or Graham Smith in order to quaîify for the team. This is not the case. Swimming accommodates ail levels of skilîs. What is important is TH£ the readiness to par 1tiPate, to improve one's skills, to enjoy the association of others of similar interests, as well as the fitàess and sense of well-being. that cornes wîth this activity. There wilî be a full pro- gramme of home and away meets throughout the season. Highlight of the season will be a tournament for the Whitby Lionsý Trophy between clubs in the Durham REgion: Ajax, Oshawa, Pickering and Whitby. This two-day meet will take place in Whitby during Winter Carnival Week.. Registration for the new season will be from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., on Thursday, September 14,' at Whitney Hall, iroquois Park. Builders» try ing for Minto Cup On Monday in British Columbia, the Whitby CBC Builders Junior- Lacrosse Club began their second quest in two years for the Minto Cup, and the Canadian Junior lacrosse champion- ship. Last year the Builders hosted Burnaby Cablevision, of Burnaby, B.C. at Iroquois Park,, but îost the battle for . the Minto Cup to Burnaby. >This year the same ' twô" teams are battling for the same titîe,- this time in Western Canada. On Aug. 22 the Builders -won the Eastern champion- ship, by defeating the Elora Mohawks at Iroquois Park Arena. Team off icials seem to feel the Builders are a more matured, defensive-minded team this year and will be a stronger contender for the Minto Cup than last year. Going into the Minto Cup final, the Builders have an impressive 21-game undefeated streak. The team won 23 and lost seven games in the regular season, but Coahc Jim Kinkson says they were hard-won victories.
