From July 31 to Aug. 3 the rides will be in operation all evening; Aug. 5 from the early morning until 11:30 p.m., and Aug. 4, 6 and 7 from noon to 11:30 p.m. The _rides andgames are glalèe eacn year bythe Knights of Columbus. PANCAKE BREAKFAST A chicken barbeque will be held at this year's County Town Carnival in addition to the regular pancake break- fast by the Whitby Rotary, Club. The chicken barbeque will be from 3:30 p.m. to8 p.m. at Heydenshore Park, on Satur- day Aug. 5. On Sunday Aug. 6 a1u .mLA. Ua to noon, the annual pancake breakfast will be held at picnic tables ad jacent to Heydenshore Pavilion. The pancake breakfast in past years has attracted more than 2,000 people, and the Rotary Club is hoping for equal success with its new chicken barbeque. _ DUNK THE CELEBRITY Once again this year, Whitby residents will have a chance to dunk their favorite celebrities, thanks to the ptihmist Club. The Optimist Club will be setting up its dunking tank at Iroquois Park' during the County Town Carnival, Aug. 3 to 7. Times are 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 3, 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Aug. 4 and all day, Aug. 5, 6 and 7. This popular event involves throwing balls at a target and if you hit the target, the celebrity of the day is dropped into a tank of water. Proceeds from "Dunl- Celebrity" will go towards the Optimist Club's youth work. -FLOWER SHOW For the second year the Brooklin Horticultural Society is holding its annual County Town Flower Show in the ccuncil chambers at the Whitby municipal building on Rossland Road. Entries will be accepted from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 5, prior to judging, and the flower show will be open to the public from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 5 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 6. Visitors to the flower show will also be able to attend a craft and hobby show in the municipal building during the same hours. The County Town Flower Show is open to all residents of Durham Region, and prizes will be awarded in many categories. KINSMEN COMPETITIONS Kinsmeh Park will again be the scene of a number of open fun competitions during the County Town Carnival. At 2 p.m. Aug. 5, the Kinsmen Club of Whitby will be conducting log sawing, horseshoe pitching and foot ball throwing competitions in the park. Anyone may show up and enter on the spot. MALTA PAVILION The food and crafts of the island of Malta will be featured at the Malta Social Club pavilion at this year's County Town Carnival. The Malta Pavilion will be open Aug. 4 to 7 in Whitney ilà .il in the Iroquois Park Arena. Times are: 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Aug. 4 and noon to 10:30 p.m. from Aug. 5 to 7. Everyone is welcome to sample the food specialities and view the many craft items* which will be on display. SQUARE DANCING AND LAWN BOWLING Square dancers and lawn bowlers will have an oppor- tunity to participate in this years County Town Carnival. July 29 from 8 p.m. to-10 p.m. the Brooklin Square will present a square dancing competition at the Shoprite parking lot at the corner of Dundas and Perry Streets. Everyone is welcome to attend. On July 30 at 2 p.m. the Whitby Lawn Bowling club will be holding an invitation- al mixed pairs bowling tournament at the bowling green on Brock Street South, beside the Senior Citizens' Activity Centre. POLICE TUG OF WAR A special new attraction at this year's County Town Carnival will be a tug of war between the Durham Regional Police and the Metro Toronto Police at Iroquois Park. The tug of war, which drew a crowd of 3,000 people at the Brooklin Spring Fair in June when the same two teams faced off, will be held Aug. 2 at 7 p.m. The 14-member Durham Regional Police tug of war team was founded by and is coached by Constable John Watson. Eight members participate in a "pull" in the 800 kilo or 1,763 pound category, using a 150-foot manilla rope. The Durham police tug of war team was formed in March of this year, and has already performed at the Brooklin and Bethany Fairs and at the Ajax Home Week. The team will be competing in the Canadian Tug of War Championships at the Canadian National Exhibi- tion Aug. 26. A large turnout is expected at the County Town Carnival for this new crowd-pleasing event. Yellow and black bumper stickers advertising the carnival are available at the Chamber of Commerce office and vaious local businesses. All you have to do to be elligible to win cash prizes is put the sticker on your car and fill in the lucky draw tag at the end of the sticker with your name, address, phone number and license 'humber. The tag should be mailed or dropped in at the Whitby Chamber of Commerce office, Whitby Centennial Building, 416 Centre Street South. The draw for cash prizes of $25. $15, $10 and $5 will be made at the officia opening dinner for the carnival, July 26 at heydenshore Pavilion. This year's carnival theme, advertised prominently on the stckers is: "The Carnival Salutes the Whitby Chamber of Com- merce Golden Jubilee." LEGION OPEN HOUSE Open house and dances will again be featured by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 112 at the County Town Carnival. Open House at the Legion Hall on Byron Street will begin at 1 p.m. Aug. 4, 5 and 7, and there will be dances at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 4 and 8 p.m. Aug. 7. Admission is free. On Aug. 6 from 2p.m. to 6 p.m. there will be a beef barbequerat the Legion Hall. Wintario admissions On Friday July 21, tickets for admission to the Wintario draw at Iroquois Park arena will go on sale at various outlets in Whitby and Brooklin. Tickets are available at $2 apiece at the Chamber of Commerce information booth at the Four Corners, Whitby Domion Hardware on Brock Street South, Plum Hollow Books, Shorty's Cigar Store and Cosgrove', Variety Store in Brooklin. Seat selection will be on a first arrival basis, and there will be some provision for standing room in the arena. On Aug. 3, the night of the Wintario draw, the doors will open at 7 p.m. and Bert Heaver will present his variety show entertainment at 7:30 p.m. The Wintario draw will be televised live at 9 p.m., featuring Fred Davis and Faye Dance. Man injured An Oshawa man was in critical condition in hospital last week following an industrial accident at Wegu Manufacturing Company in Whitby July 11. Durham Regional Police reported that Douglas Burleigh, 27, who lives at the Pineridge Motel, Oshawa, was hit on the neck and shoulders while cleaning a hopper at the Whitby boat manufacturingcompany. He was taken to the Dr. J. O. Ruddy Hospital in an unconscious state and later transferred to the Scarbor- ough General Hospital.
