The conunittee has hired two students under the Ontario Ministry of l{ousing's .Experience '78 program to work for 10 weeks leaning up the down- town area, painting stores, and doing general main- tenance work., The students are Roger Bland, 16, who will enter Grade il at Henry Street .High School ini the fali, and Joel Kaiser, 22, who--will enter his fourth year at the University of Waterloo in September. Both are Whitby resident s. Roger and Joel will be assisting downt.own busi- nesses in cleanup and main- tenance work from June 19 to Aug. 25. John p- of the downtown committee is* supervising the* two students and lining up jobs for them to do.ý By the end of the 10 weeks, he expects they will have done work for about 15 to -20 businesses. So far, Joel and Roger have been cleaning out a number of basements of stores in the downtown, and have managed to get rîd of a lot of garbage. 1TI one basement they found the rernains of a bowl- ing alley which had flot been used for about 40,years, and in another they foundboxes of old invoices dating back 30 years. Besides cleaning up neg- lected garbage of years gone by, the studenÏts have painted the front of Harry Vorvis's former pool hall, and have several other assignments pending to paint store fronts. Also, they will. be doing a number of inside mainten- ance jobs for businesses including the Free Press, which has just moved into a new building. 1Most of the jobs take about a week at, each business, with the students usually working as a team, but sometimes separately.. "The merchants have been good to us and understand- ing," says Joel. Mr. Roberts sees the student's work as a positive project which will help improve the image of down- town Whitby, and. help a number of businesses com- plete maintenance jobs that might not otherwise-be done. He expects the bylaw to designate downtown Whitby as an improvement area will come before counceil for third reading before the end of the month. If passed, the bylaw, which bas already had two read- ines. would -rovide an annual1 $10,O0O' budget for 1979 and 198 for further improvements to the down- town. YMCA offers swim lessons 'at Kinsmen Park pool The, Durham Region Family Y.M.C.A. will be operating Kinsmen Park Pool for the second year, this sumnmer. This year the Y. will be offering swimming lessons for children as well as for aduits, plus. a water- polo class. The childrens' lesç.-i s will run every day fron -nday to Friday for thret .ceks. The forty-five minv, iessons will be available for Pre- Beginners right through to Sixth Starý. The cost of the* lesson is $15, or $12 for Y. memnbers. The aduit lessons are, available, in two formns: group lessons and semi- private lessons. Both types run twice a 'week for a month on, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The group lessons have 6 to 12 participa nts and cost $15, or $12 for Y. members. The semi-private lessons have a maximum 'of four participants and cost $18, or $15 for Y. members. These classes will operate only if there is sufficient interest. As well as trying adult lessons this summer, the Y.M..C.A. is also offering waterpolo lessons. The waterpolo class will run Monday to Friday for three weeks. The class will be structured with a 15 minute game ending each lesson. The cost is $15, or $12 for Y. memnbers. This class will run only if sufficient interest is shown. Henry club presents play m'England On June 24, the students . f the Henry Street High School presented their award- winning production' of "Go Ask Alite,", at the Greenwich Dramna Festival in London, England. The Henry: Students were Canada's entry 'in. this festival which features per- formera froni ah. ovcr, the world. The students also toured Stratford, Cheshire and York and held a special performn- ance at a school in Whitby, England, Whitby Ontario's twinning partner. Each student has paid $600 in expenses for the trip, and the remaining $200 per student was raised throügh a I MONTE CARW.
