COLLINS Ashburn residents will beinterested in the subject of this week's column, for the womnan whose outstanding career is outlined here was borti in the hamWe of Ashburn in 1878. Her na me was Alice Rioger, daughter of Rev. Walter Roger, who was the ministee of Burns Presbyterian Church in Ashburn at the timfe of ber birth. Her grandfather was Rev. John Roger, the firs t Presbyterian minister in Peterborough, and Peterborough was to be her home for many years. SMiss Roger was educated at London Ont. and later at Havergal College, a girl's private school in Toronto. She became a concert pianist and was one of the original teachers on the staff of the Peterborough Conservatory of -vugic. She studied with such noted music teachers as William Cav an Barr 1on, Dr. Edward Fisher, Arthur Fisher, and Dr. F. HW Torrington. Edward Fisher and F. H. Torrington were vausic directorsat the Ontario Ladies' College in Whitby in the 1870s and 1880s., Miss -Roger went to Germany to study music in the 1890s, and after her return to Canada she taught theory at the Toronto Conservatory of Music, the University of Toronto, Havergal College, and the Peterborough Conservatory of Music. After returning from the island of Mauritius in the Far East where she spent three years with her parents, she married, Alexander J. Collins of Peterborough.,in 1906. Mrs. Collins spent many years as a music teacher and held rnany degrees in music. She was on of the early organizers of the movement for women's suffrage in Canada, was a member of the Walkerton Board of Education, and at the ti me of her death in 1955, was vice-presiderit of the Peterbarough branch, United Nations Association in Canada. Mrs. Collins was a member of the Canadian Authors Association, the Canadian Women's Press Club (founded by a Whitby man, George H. Ham), the Canadian Senior Women's Golf Club, the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers, and an honorary member of the Eugene Field Society of New York. On Sunday, may 28, the Whitby District Annual Church Parade will be in progress starting at 2 p.m. The parade will work it's way down'Brock Street to Centennial Park, were there will be outdoor services. The 'Women's Institute held .a meeting in the Community Mrs. Collins published a number of songs, and set to music .Rudyard Kipling's "Sons of Martha" for the Engineering Institue of Canada. She was the author of a series of biographies entitled "Real People", and her poems were inicluded in a number of anthologies, including two published in London, England. CommunityGuide'coniing The Whitby Free Press, in co-oiýetat1n with the Whitby Chartiber, of Commerce, is prodýicing a Community Guide in honor of- the Chambei's Sth anniversary. The Comrnunity Guide will list recreational activities and facilities, eommunity groups, and various agencies located in Whitby or which serve the town. It will also advertise the town's business community. Fifteen thousand copies of the 48-page bookiet will be printed and a copy will ýbe distributed to every home in Whity through the Welcome Wagon, says. Chamber President Gord Hanna. Publication of the com- munîty guide is planned for early July. The deadiine for advertis- ing for the community guide is June 2.
