The door-to-dïoo r 1campaign this year netted $25,700 $3,700 over the goal of $22,000. Added to, this, for the first time, is the Special Events. total of $4,300 making a grand total of $30,000. Even this will be surpas- sed as the Whitby Kiwanis Club lias yet to hold their Ladies Great Ride for Cancer, an event which will visibly draw attention to the fear of the fight against cancer.. "The people of Whitby are to, be congratulated and thanked", says Marion Irwin, "for responding s0 generously to the fight against such a dreaded disease." What makes ahll this especially gratifying to, the Irwins is the fact that the target of' $1.00 *per' capita suggested by the OntariQ Division of the Canadian Cancèer Society lias been reached. Last year the aver-, age per capita for- the pro- 1 vince of Ontario was 93 1 cents. At. the moment Whitby's per capita contri- bution based on the October, 1977 population figure. of 28, 852 is $1.04. Aithougli there were about six hundred canvassers at work during the month of April, the Irwins worked most directly with the- 27 zone chairmen, each of whom was responsbile for organizing the canvassers for a particular area of town. They endeavoureti this year to help the zone chair- men find more canvassers s0 that no one canvasser would have more than 10 to 15 homes to canvass. This ideas was to recognize the fact that nowadays people are in- volved in many different projects and many more households have both hus- band and wife working. Therefore, the lrwins feit that more people would have the time to canvass if the area they were asked to do was a smalone and, con- sequently,- attempted to get a lot of people involved doing a small job well in order to make the overail success of the campaign greater. The response to this idea was really good anabling several zones to be better covered this year. In a few, areas, however, there was stili difficulty in securing enough canvassers, and, in, this cse, several people willingly covered more than one route.
