H1e wants to take part in the world roler skating championships in Europe in 1980. Jim, at 16, is already well on his way toward making a name for bimselft in roler skating. On Jan., 28 and 29, be and bis ,partner, Wilma Graham of Ajax, won third place in tbe Novice Dance event at an invitational skating competitiori in Loraine, Ohio. Jim and Wilnia are memn- bers of the Ajax Roller Skat- ing Club, the only Canadian club in the competition, and were up against 34 Amnerican teamns. From March 24 to 2U.,,Jim, and a new partner, Lori Logan of Pickering took third place ini the Sopbmore Dance and Sophmore Free Dance categories at Virginia Beach, Virginia. Sophmore is two levels above Novice., At the end of May, jim and Lori will go to the AI-Ontario Provincials, and if they qualify at this event, they will proceced to the Canadian championships, whièh-~may be held in Oshawa. Jim started roler skating with the Ajax club fi ve yeaËs ago and bas been competing for three years, always in the dance category. In November 1975, he en- tered his first comipetition-at Hamilton, and won third place in Novi-ce Dance. So far he bas ýskated in eight competitions and won 17 medals (nine gold, six silver and three bronze). Jim was taught roller skat- place Fine Linens ing by Ken Barber, the rink operator for the Ajax Club, and has reached the point where hie is entering more advanced stages of roller skating. Mr. Barber says lie bas taught jim al lie can at the level 0 f- the Ajax club, and Jim is now skating at the Mimico Skating Club in Toronto. Roler skating takes time and lots of practice. Jim practices 20 hours a week to keep up his skills for cornpe- tition. H1e has been taking regular lessons and says he likes skating because be meets a lot- of People from different parts of Canada and the Unaited States at the compe- titions. Herels ow If you operate a business or farm and create new jobs between May 1 and October 21, 1978, the Ontario Youth Employment Programn will give you a grant of $125 per hour (up to a maximum of $50-00a week) towards the wages of each elig ible youth you ýhire for those joabs. Employers; Anyone who has carried on a business or operated a farrn in Ontario for at least one year prior to May 1 rnay receive grants for up to 6 ne positions per business location for eligible youth employees. Emplo)yees; Employees mnust be at least 15 but flot 2 5 years old on May 1, 1978. Emnployees cannot bc directly related to the emIployer. Employees must reside and be eligible to work in Ontario. Duration;- The program is in effect for 2 5 weeks fr4m May 1 through October 21, 1978. An employer is not required to hire a youth for the full 25-week Ternis of Employment; To be eligible for funding, a position created must be in addition to regular and seasonal employment normally provided during the program period. It must provide a minimum of 25 hours of supervised work per week for at least six weeks. Grant; Approved employers will receive a gran t of $1l. 2 5 per hour up to a maximum of $5000 a week (40. hours employrnent) for each youth hired under the program., NOTE; Grant- funds are limited. If you wish to hire a youth any time during the program's duration, -please submit your application as sooîý- as possible. Muskrtt trapping creates controversy. Naturalists and biologlkgts are prepared to fight over a decision of the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority te allow muskrat trappingin the Lynde Shores Conservation Area. At its April meeting CLOCA approved a tender of $100 for trapping privileges in the conservation area. According to CLOCA CHAIRMAN John Goodwin, the Ontario Mînistry of Natural Resources districk biologist favors the continua - tion of muskrat trapping, but the Durham Region Field Naturalists are opposed be- cause of the danger trapping migbt pose te birds returning to the conservation area from the soutb.
