Camp X was built in the surmmer of 1941, and was a top secret installation. It served as a training base for allied agents, and an experi- mental station for the de- velopment of weapons for the secret war. Sucli major espionage activities as the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich the Nazi "Butcher of Prague,"'were planned and co-ordinated at Camp X. After the war, Camp X continued in use as a Canadian governmfelit communfications centre. During the war it bad been the location of Hydra, a highly sophisticated radio transmitter andreceiverwh.ich kept contact with allied agents around the world. In 1945 Camp X was the secret hiding place of the Russian Emnbassy spy Igor Gouzenko, who had to be protected since lie had turned informant on Soviet post-war espionage activites. P.km nngioos&h. and Viity Three Oshaw»a counicillors are objecting to a purchase of four acres of land south of the Durham Région head- quarters, which was approved last week by a closed meeting of the finance committee. The region is negotiating with the United Church to buy the land for about $200,000. That amount plus $1 00,000 has been allotted by the regional council. .The councillors are skept- ical about assurances that the land purchase does not mean that an expansion of the' headquarters will occur. Councillor Bruce Mc- Arthur called the possible expansion a 'TaI Mahal" and isn't convinced of the need., ,He suggested. the provin- cial assessment office now in th'e regional headquarters in Whitby could be moved' to the new Ministry of Revenue office to be built in Oshawa. This, lie said, would provide* space for the public works, and planning ahnd, develop- ment, departmnents. now in a buidin on Consumrers Drive in Whtby. Oshawa Mayor, Jim Potticary wants the regional headquarters ini Oshawa, or at least somne place' more accessible to the public. Doug Wilson, another Oshawa councillor, ýsays an annex will do for the people who work -for the region, and the. région,, j'oudnot proceed with a ne" -building when it is currently in debt, "'we don't know by, how mnuch."
