PAGE 2, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1977, WHITBY FREE PRESS Region wants 401 interchange study Ihe region of Durham is asking the Ministry of Transportation and Commun- ications to pay 75 per cent of the cost of $40,000 study for an interchange at Blair Street and Highway 401. The region, today, is expected to approve a re- commendation from the plan- ning and development depart- ment that a study be under- taken to investigate the feasi- bility and desirability of pro- viding this interchange which would be located between the existing interchanges at Brock Street and Thickson Road. The region also wants to establish a technical review committee for this study, made up of representatives from the regional works and planning and development departments, the Town of Whitby and the Ministry of Transportation and Commu- nications. Steps will be taken to select consultants for the study and to pass a bylaw to authorize the necessary agree- ments. The study is in accor- dance with the Town of Whitby's official plan which recommends a study for re- locating the Brock Street in- terchange to the east of its present location. Blair Street is presently an unopened road allowance which is being de- veloped, with housing sub- divisions on each side. The regional official plan indicates Blair street as a possible site for a Highway 401 overpass. If the interchange is built, the planning and deve- lopment committee reports, Victbria Street would have to be moved south, to join Watson Street, and there would be an impact on the cost and location of a future underpass at the CNR tracks on Victoria Street. Other items to be af- fected by the proposed inter- change are: accessibiltiy to Highway 401, accessibility to the industrial areas south of the highway, traffic dis- ruption in downtown Whitby and Pbrt Whitby, and possible changes to highway 12 and connecting link agreements. Yacht Club discusses storm Jamage Nov. 29 A program to prevent major damage such as that which occurred in a violent storm Sept. 24, will be pre- sented to the membership of the Whitby Yacht Club at its annual meeting Nov. 29. Commodore Phil Finkle says a four-nan com- mittee has prepared 14 recom- mendations, and more are ex- pected by the annual meeting. One of the recommen- dations will be to have the strength of the club's floating dock system tested. Nearly 100 boats were damaged during the September storm when four sections of float- ing dock dragged their an- chors in winds up to 50 miles per hour. The level of the lake lifted 18 inches and swells of six feet piled boats on top of each other. Damage to the boats lias been assessed by insur- ance adjustors at $150,000 while the dock system re- ceived about SI 5,000 damage. All the docks have been re- paired, says the commodore.
