Dr. J. E. Watt, director of environmental health, said 12 samples of water were taken from various locations along the creek in July, and excessive bacteria levels have been detected. 'Some are alright and some are not so hot,' he said, but pointed out that 50 per cent of the samples were well over the acceptable standard. The tests revealed 'pretty high' totals of both coliform and fecal bacteria in .the creek is what he had said. According to Dr. Watt, the amount of pollution depends on such factors as weather and the amount of runoff from the land, includ- ing farmers' fields. Reports have circulated that the water was so polluted that farm animals could not drink it, but Dr. Watt was skeptical about such reports. Dr. Watt said the pre- liminary test results indicate bacteria counts in the creek are above the recommended. limits for recreational waters, but there are no immediate plans- to post signs banning swimming. Howard Malcolm, chief public health inspector at Ajax, who conducted the tests, said he hopes to com- plete a series of tests on the creek over the next three to four weeks. However, he will not release figures on bacteria counts until the series of tests is finished. Members of the North Ward Community Association have expressed concern about inadequate septic tank systems around sewage saturating the land creek.
