Mr. Cafik also reported that the federai govemnt has approved a $2,038,000 grant for the Brock Street CPR underpass, expected to underpas s buit on the Whitby- Pickering townlihe (Regional Road 23). He said the CPR crossing there does not rneet any federai grant criteria, but he was able to get approvai for construction to begin, while ietting the region and tlhe railway work out the financ- ine at a later date. Bill Sorichetti, President« of the Lions Club, has inform- ed the recreation department that the club is prepared to purchase a $7,000 1 2-passenge r van to provide transportation to and from the seniors activity centre on Brock Street. The plan is to present the van to the town, and have the town carry the costs of opera- tion and insurance, amounting to $ 1,474 a year. Recreation Director Wayne DeVeau has suggested that a minimum charge of 25 cents per rider could be charged until actual costs are established. An estimate of $20 per week for 50 weeks (80 ride rs per week) would provide $1 ,000 revenue he reported to council. This would leave an annual cost to the town of $474. Councillor Joy Thompson says she knows of four people who wouid act as volunteer drivers. Town Treasurer Forbes McEwen hias stated that the town has not budgeted 10 cover the operational costs, and suggested the Lions Club shouild ensure there is a need for the van before purchasing it. Mr. DeVeau suggested that the Lions Club be asked 10 rent a van on a trial basis for onie year and assess the need for il at the end of tbis period.
