PAGE 6, WEDNESDAY, lUNE 22, 1977, WHITBY FREE PRES1 Brk1in ~ï>Byines Brooklit was truly saddened last week upon hearing of the death of Bob Hiedges. Bob was very well knoxvn arotind town and as president of the BrookIUn Legion, inich admired for his indiistry and integrity. Ile vas certainly a very farniliar sight walking arouind town, visiting the library and chatting with everyone hie met. As a comrnunity leader, a fiather, a husband, a friend, he had few equals. His loss will be feit in Brooklin for a very long time. 1Another sad piece of news this week is that Gladys Rudkin will be closing her store in a few weeks. It has been suich a pleasure to be able to drop in and pick up small items that ordinarily would require a trip out-of- town. Such a shame that things are so difficuit for the FISHER REFRIGERATION SERVICE Repaira to Ail Makes Freezers - Refrigerators - Air Conditioners We Recharge Automobile Air Conditioning 20 QUEEN STREET BROOKLIN, ONTARIO 655-3233 BROWN 'S s small businesses these days. Manufacturers and salesmen are flot interested in the smnall accounits but prcfer to seli in huge quantities to larger stores. The sm-aller business wliich lias traditionally offered individuat service and backed its inerchandise 1 00% finds it'very difficuit to to compcte. And so it gocs, we as consumners have also been dreadfully spoiled by the vast array of mierchandise available in large departmient stores - seccms there is -no sati sfying us any longer with good service and solid guarantees alone, we also want variety - a large range of choices in colojir, quality and design. Gladys has clone a great job over the years - gctting uis just the perfect shacle of wool and kceping basic supplies on hand for us. Brooklin will mniss this business, however, to ail Glady's friends and acquaintances the good news is that Gladys plans to remnain with us. If you've been thinking about dropping in to secelber and browse aromnd, now would be a good time. Brooklin and district Kinettes held a very successful ticket sale on a hand-rnade quilt recently., The winner was a well-known Brooklin inan, Gus Brown of North Street. We understand that the quilt was very beautiful. A remninder about that novel "Bake sale in the Park", The Kinoven Rebekah Lodge of Brooklin are busy planning a large bake sale and White Elephant table to be held in Grass Park, on June 30 - that is a Thursday - from I1 p.m. until 5 p.rn. Don't miss this chance to pick up somne excel- lent home baking! During the months of July and August, the public library in Brooklin will be open every day, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. as usual, except for Saturdays. The library will not be open on Saturdays 1 repeat, but will definitely be open the rest of the week - I emphasize this because sonie confusion always results frorn changes in hours. During the sumnier special arrangemnents can be made (very simply) to extend the current three-week borrowing period on books to accomnodate vacation trips you may be panning. Should you wish to take out library books for longer than three weeks just ask library staff to mark thiem "for ho lidays". The Brooklin Redmen very handily beat the Fergus senior lacrosse tcam last Saturday after ai very hard fought gamne. The score was quite close during most of the game but the local teamn came on very strongly to win in the last peiod. If you missed it - I can only say you mnissed an exciting evening of cntertairnent. This local team puts a lot of strenuous effort and determination into their garne. Ncxt Saturday, June 25 the Brooklin Rednîen will play Owen Sound at 8 p.nm. in Brooklin Memrnoial Arena. Believe it - the senior lacrosse match is a great place to spend a Saturday nighit! A note to Brooklin Kinsinen, last meeting of this season, June 28. The executive would like to sec a 100% night. Lots of business to wrap Uip, it should be an interest- ing meeting. The election of officers for 1977-78 saw very little change the exception being in the position of Treasurer. Re-elected were: President, Mrs. Russell B. Collins, Whitby, vice-president, Mrs. R. Leo Gray; Secretary, Mae Storie; elected Treasurer, Mrs. E. A. Hilîmer; ail of Oshawa. Also re-elected to Office are Press Secretary, Charlotte Gentles, Whitby and repre- sentative to Alumnae Council, Mrs. Stanley L. Osb orne, Oshawa. The discussions duning the business portion of the meeting included the current Castle Chapter's project of re-upholstering the furniture in the Conimon Room of the College. This was followed by the finalization of the plans for the A & P's Candie- light Dinner - held at the College, June 14. -I*'he pro- ceecis [rom the event go toward Alumnae sponsored scholarshiips, bursaries. and College projects. The Centennial Chapter will be invited to' the CastIe Chapter's Septemnber meeting. ýBus extension Extension of Oshawa's bus service into Whitby could cost Whitby taxpayers $100 each says Mayor Gartshore, but discussions on the pro- posed extension are contin- uing. Mayor Gartshorc says he is concerned that the number of citizens who will use the bus service would not justify the cost. Only about 40 people a day used a triaibus service last sunier, he said; and to break even, there would have to be 20 times that nuinber. Three choices appear open to the town, says the mayor. The first is to buy its own bus, second, pay for the service now offered by Charterways, or extend the Oshawa transit service into Whitby. Accord- ing to Mayor Gartshore, al three choices are uneconoinical. CHF£$£501 MOFIosrTFOOD Top COMICE2K9h;.gS2.49 Bief DS",51.-OZ TIN PEP DuGF0053 lo LOWS KMTY LITTR54h.
