Maria was the world's first "bliie baby" to have hier lieart corrected by surgery, and shie celebrated her birth- day in Toronto with the doctor who made it possible, Dr. William Mustard. Maria, lier mother, Theresa and Dr. Mustard marked the occasion at the Park Plaza hotel witli chamnpagn~e and 1 6 roses. At the age of two, in 1963, Marîaia ade medical hlistory by being the first baby in the world born with an uipside down heart tu undergo surgery that would give lier a normal life. Since then, Dr. Mustard's operation has saved thiousands of "blue babies". An upside down Iteart means that one side of the heart receiving the blood does flot match the side pumping it out, and until Dr. Mustard perfected his opera- tioni, a liole had to be punched between the two sides, 1-owever, babies with this conditioni did not live long. Maria had the hole imade in lier hieart when she was three weeks old wheîi she was a ward of the Children's Aid Society. Whien she was a year old she was given a foster home by Ben and Theresa Surnioski, and tliey were told she has only six months to live. Four and eiglit-week Volunteers get a baby sittin g service A Babysitting Service for Volunteers at the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital is now being.offered. This service is provided by tlie Volunteer Association of Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, free of charge. Regular babysitting will be on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. It is lioped that this service will allow young mothers to participate in a variety of Volunteer Programmes, includ- ing: Music, Crafts, One-to- One, Therapeutic Pub, Good- Luck Clothing Sliop, and the Patient's Library.
