WHITBYFREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 16, i977, PAGE 11 CoOp housing piroposed A proposai is before counicil for the construction of a co-operative housing projeet in the core area of WIiùtby. The proposai, by Karvdin Construction, is for the construction of 48 apartment units 'in two buildings each containing 24 units, to be located on the haif-biock bounded by Green, Dunlop and Athol Streets, north of Dunlop. The two buildings would be four stories high, with the whole project being supplied by underground parking. The concept isto develop the site for non-profit co-operative housing, a style of ownership and manage- ment which is neither condo- minium- nor traditional pri- vate apartment ownership. Under traditional private apartment ownership tenants, have no say in the manage- ment and operation of the building, whereas in co- operative housing the tenants- as members of a corporation own and make the decisions as to the maintenance and operation of the project. Therefore, through co- operative tenant management and involvement, rentai rates can be maintained bCiow the normal private market rentai rates, says Planning Director Kevin Tunney. In addition, unlike condo- ,inium projects, no one has equity ownershîp _)f their individual unit. The planning department has recommended that the -proposal be approved subject to the appHLcant entering into an appropriate site plan agree- ment with the town.
