UNICEF Dear Editôr: "The Ontario UNICEF Committee would like to take this op portunity to thank the puiblic for their generous support of the Unýited Nations Children's Fund in 1976. Once again, Ontario- ites have corne through with flying co lors..1h e total revenue raised in Ontario, for our two major programs Hallowe'en and Greeting Cards reached a total of $750,000. In addition we have received general donations totalling, $39,306 for a grand total of $789,306 for 1976. Through the generous support of SO many people during the two campaigns, and through the year, millions of children in countries from Afganistan to Zambia wil be able to look forward to a health- ier, happier and more pro- ductive tùture. Getting down to specifics, we feel the p ublic would like to Know where some of their contributions are g oing and so here are a few examples. 1.- Clean Water? Not as simple as turning on a tap. Only 20 per cent of the population of' Cape Verde have access to helps very clean water. Withoutj clean water, such diseases as gastro-enteritis and other diseases related to poor sanitation run rampant. But withi the help of donations, steel water storage tanks, stand pipes in villages and chiorination plants wil be installed. 2. In Vietnam, over- crowding and inadequate facilities in the sehools.is a great problem. UNICEF Canada is assisting the Vietnamese government in building two new sehools of eight class- Mroms each in the northern delta region, where approximately 30 percent of the Vietnamese population is concent- trated. 3. Nutrition- In Bangladesh, the basic food is grain and the main source of protein is fish. So a 'food for work' pilot programn has been initiated, for the people, providing grain for the landless poor in retuirn for their work on the UNICEF-funded fish farms. The public may be in- terested to know that the Federal governiment pfays a very vital role in match- ing grants -for projects such as the ones listed above. This year the government's contribution to the world-wide UNICEF program, amounted to $6,500,000 an increase of 25 per cent over last year.
