Fire Chief Ed Crouch reports that despite the two major fires, residential and commercial' fire losses were considerably reduced from previous years, and the fire prevention program has been largely responsible for this reduction. During 1976 the town acquired the former Ontario County works building on the ninth concession near Myrtie and through the efforts of the summer students program, the hall was completely renovated, painted, and' is now used as Fire Station No. 4 serving the area from the eighth concession to the 1 Oth concession, from the Pickering Town Line to the Oshawa-Whitby Town Line. The'main advantage of this location is that it now pro- vides a five-miùle maximum distance coverage by the fire department vehicles to any property within the Town of Whitby, and therefore the owners receive the appro. priate reduction in their fire insurance rates. .In 1976, five part-time fire fighters were added to Hall No. 1 at Brooklin;, eight at Hall No. 3 at Brock and Coiborne Streets, and nine werp MinItinpr f'nr the new Whitby catcher visits the Blue Jays An avid Whitby basebali fan, who plays catcher for a locanl Bantam league team, has distinctive symbol appearedl in the pages of The Star.
