WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1977, PAGE 13 Whitby Blades first in girls' hockey A Whitby Warriors gets a shot on an open goal in last Sunday's game against Thunder Bay, but it was not good enough to get the Warriors' first place. They lost 5-4, and officially end up in third place in the league standings. Photo by Bob McGrath -5-4 loss puts Warriors in 3rd place The Whitby Warriors were nosed out of first-place when they dropped a 5-4 decision to the Thunder Bay Twins in the last game of the regular season at Iroquois Park Arena Sunday. In the best hockey game of the season, played before a near capacity crowd of 1390, the Warriors outshot the Twins 50-40, but were stymied by the goaltending of John Traicus. When the Warriors took a 4-1 lead into the third period, TB started sending 4 men in deep to press, leaving Whitby with a number of 2 on l and 3 on 1 breaks, but they could not beat Traicus. The Twins'gamble paid off as their forechecking pressure produced the winning margin. As a result of weekend action, TB finished first with 47 points. Cambridge second with 46 and Whitby third with 45. So, in first round playoffs, it will be TB vs Brantford, Cambridge vs Barrie and Whitby vs Orillia. The Warriors opened Tues. night at home in Whitby against the Terriers, travel to Orillia Friday and play game three at Iroquois Park on Saturday night - game time 8:30 p.m. There was good news on Cyclists try for racing This weekend is the big one for ice racers Rob Egan and Mike Kehoe, of Brooklin, as they try for the Canadian National ice racing champion- ship in the sidecar class. Mr. Egan and Mr. Kehoe built their own Yamaha ice racing motorcycle in December and January, with a unique innovation--car wheels and tires instead of regular motor- cycle wheels. At the first round of the national championshipsFat Bewdley, on Rice Lake, Feb. 6, they came second in the last two races after crashing in the first race. On Minnow Lake at Sudbury on Feb. 12 and 13 they took first place from Sunday for the Warriors - at the conclusion of the game, the Belanger Trophy, awarded annually to the team with the best goaltending record, was presented to Whitby's Mike Ryckman and Dave Huline. They had allowed one goal fewer than the Twins goaltenders for the season. And Peter Vipond was pre- sented with the Coul Award a new trophy which will be presented annually to the Warrior player who scores the most points in the regular sea- son. Vipond finished with ~48 points, one more than Charlie Convery. hampionship tour competitors from across Ontario, in a "pretty tight" race. This weekend at Ste. Feliciene, Quebec, théy will try for the Canadian champ- ionship with their home-made 750 cc. vehicle. The race is sanctioned under the Canadian Motorcycle Association, which has only recently recognized sidecar racing.
