He wants to see the Chamber's membership grow from its present figure of 96 to 200 this year. Already six new menibers have been add- ed since the first of the year. "Lt is my opinion that the membership in the Chamber should be increased signifi- cantly this year and 1 have made a personal commitment to cati upon every business within the town somfetirne during 1977 to solicit new memberships", says Mr. Hanna. In addition to increasing membership, Mr. Hanna wants the Chamber to produce an up-to-date, first-class brochure about Whitby, in co-operation .with the town officiais. "With the opening of the new Town Hall being charac- terized as a 'people place' it is Wintèr Carnival iis set for Feb. 24 to 27 Plans are nearing comple- tion for Whitby's fourth annual Winter Carnival sponsored by the town recreation department in co- operation with- the fire department. The four-day carnival, at Iroquois . Park arena and swimming pool, begins Thursday Feb. 24 and continues through Sunday Feb. 27. On Feb. 24 from 5 p.m. to 10 pa., there will be elemeintary and secondary school hockey and' brooni- bail games, opening cere- monies and carnival queen crowning at 8: 15 p.m., and an Old Timners' hockey tourna- ment game. On Feb. 25 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.- the school hockey and broomnbali gamnes continue, there will be a girls' hockey tournament gamne, and another Old Timers' hockey tournament game. On Feb. 26 froni 10 a.rn. to 8:30 p.m. there will be more hockey and brdomball games, girls' hockey tournia- ment, secondary school swim meet, elementary school dinghy races, and a tentatively scheduled Whitby Warriors Senior A playoff game. On Feb. 27 from 1*0 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. there will be Old Timers' hockey gamnes, elcmentary school skate races, girls' ringette competition, elementary and secondary school broombail and hockey Whitby Figure Skating Club, girls' hockey finals, and oldtimers hockey finals.. Whitby'sthree high schools, Anderson, Henry and D)en is O'Connor will be participating in a swîm meet starting at 1: 15 p.m. at the pool. Admission to, the Winter Carnival is 25 cents for children and 50 cents for aduits of high school age and over. During 1977 the Whitby Chamber of Commerce will continue to hold rnonthly luncheon meetings withknow- ledgeable speakers on inter- esting subjects, says Mr. Hanna. The Chamber will again be hosting the Peter Perry Award night and the annual trade fair at the County Town Mr. Hanna has announced the Chamber's interest in and support of the plans to designate downtown Whitby as an improvement area, and the upcoming presentation of phase one of the Brooklip study. "In summary, 1977 will be a year of decision and action for and by our community; it is our responsibility to be involved in this creative progress", says Mr. Hanna.
